I have to agree. The 500's platform is paid for, since it's shared with the Ford Ka and sister Fiat Panda. It's also simpler (torsion beam rear end versus the Mini's multilink setup). But the payoff is arguably cuter, fresher styling, more room and a lower price for about the same driving experience.
