I'm opening this up to you guys

Raza

Indulge my narcissism.  I know replacing the Jetta is still 2-3 years off, but I do like to shop early.  Every time I see a car I think "Oh, that's what I'll get".  And it changes every fucking day.

So I thought I'd ask you guys.  What should I replace the Jetta with?  New, used, doesn't matter much. No requirements other than it has to have a manual transmission.  Tell me what you think.

Price range?

I'm going to suggest an S-4.

2-3 years is a long time. Who knows what will be out by then? Ask me again 2 years from now.

Right now I'd say a Porsche 959 would be bad ass.

Under 40K, I suppose.  I haven't really set out an amount.  I'm really considering going for an under-budget performance car (leaving a cushion for maintenance) and driving it forever.  Something like an M5 or E46 M3 or a GTO.  Who knows?  I might end up with a 500 Abarth.

I wonder if the FT-86 is going to be any good. Because the lead engineer is really talking the talk.

What is it with you guys and having multiple cars?  You don't need more than one car..... :rage: :rage:

The money isn't lining up and I don't think it will for a while.  I'm still considering it, but for now, let's assume that I'm not going to get a second car until I can afford an Elise.

Anything with a Toyota badge will be a hard sell.  Actually, any Japanese car but a Subaru, Mazda, or Evo would be a hard sell.

(By the way, an Evo X is what I've found to be the most logical choice of all cars out there.  But I'm not sold.)

You need a convertible from nice spring and fall days.
A sports sedan for driving on trips, to work and out for diner.
A Sports car for track days and those kick ass mountain drives.
And a truck would be nice but I'm not sure if I'll get one of those.

That's like saying you only need one TV, gun or girl friend.

Rich

I second the second car motion.

If I could do it over I'd buy a slightly used fun to drive economy car and then some kind of roadster.... V8 Solstice, Cobra replica, maybe a C5 vert... something with a V8, two doors, and two seats.

If you're sticking to one car, then Skyactiv Mazda 3.  Should be fun to drive and get good fuel economy.  Save a little money vs buying a premium 25k compact (GTI-etc) for that second car that should be coming soon at that time.

Then 4 on a 914. Even I could do that.

Why not just keep the Jetta?

Cars need to be replaced eventually.  True enough, even three years in, I'm still in the honeymoon phase, but I imagine at some point I'll grow tired of it.

But it's good to be like you too. You get to own all kinds of cars.

Too many out there that I want.

Letting the Passat go was a very emotional experience for me.  It was a friend in my darkest times.  The Jetta has continued to be a friend through dark times.  But as the years go by and the miles pile on, it'll be time to make a change.

I still think about how I betrayed my MX-3 and sold it. I've had dreams about her.

Sorta ridiculous--what about a late 80's GTI?

If you take your time looking, I bet a great example will pop up sooner or later.
