Why would he get a Boxster older than the one he already had?

The only C5 worth getting is the Z06

The M3 would be slower than what he has now

It would have to be the Updated M with 320hp, not 240hp

AP1 S2000?  Hells yes

Cobra?  Raza couldn't handle one

80's 911?  The engine and trans axle will end up against a tree.

Meh, it doesn't matter if it's older/slower than what he has or has had. What matters is if it is fun or not.

No, they aren't reliable. They're 25 years old and Italian. Reliable does not translate. Great cars, though. I would totally own one as a second car if they weren't expensive and rare.

A few problems on a car doesn't equate to "unreliable".  ;)

Quote from: Rupert on October 10, 2011, 01:36:49 PMAnd by the way, you're talking to a guy who owns and drives an old German car with a $2500 clutch job price, whereas you drive your sister's fancy new econo-Bimmer. So maybe back off the be a man stuff, eh? ;)

The Bimmer may be replaced soon by something a bit bigger, FWD/AWD and diesel-powered.  :praise:

The money isn't lining up and I don't think it will for a while.  I'm still considering it, but for now, let's assume that I'm not going to get a second car until I can afford an Elise.

Save $ longer.  Have more $.  Buy Elise.

Or is the Jetta on lease?

The Jetta is a lease, but I'll be buying it off lease.  I'm nearly 30,000 miles over my allowed mileage.  I'll probably have 11K+ in overages by the time the lease is up.  It'll cost me more to give the car back than to buy it.  Right now, trade in value on the car is only like $11,300

Why would you lease a car with your commute?

Don't you get slightly better rates if the dealership thinks they are getting the car back with fairly low mileage?

Didn't you have a long commute way back when you drove the Boxster and could guess you'd have one again?

Regardless, this IMO is one reason out of about 300 why leasing is almost never the best route. I don't know how many miles I'll drive 12 or 24 mos from now and would not put myself in a position where I'd be penalized for driving either more or less than an arbitrary #.

I hate leasing.  I think it's just another way to get people to buy a more expensive car than they can afford, and hook them into a permanent car payment.

I didn't think I'd get this job at the time.  Actually, they told me they wouldn't hire me until I got a job elsewhere.

But that's neither here nor there.  I agree with you about leasing and won't do it again.

Honestly, get something similar to the Jetta. Maybe the new one? No matter what you get, you will get bored with it, so it's probably better to get something light.

Ugh, I hate the new one.  Cheaper materials, it looks terrible, and it has the rear suspension out of a MkIII or something.

Even if you find some perfect car on paper, you might wind up hating it when you get to drive it.

And even still, unless you get something that is 100% about driving (i.e., NSX), I don't think you'll be 100% satisfied.

You are a bachelor... I say you get an NSX or Cayman S now, and if you need something practical, get another car to add to the collection and keep one or the other at your parents' place. I don't think there's any way you could be dissatisfied with either, except in the rare instance that you need to carry more than 1 person or stuff. Me personally in those events I would rent a U Haul van or some cheapo rental car. The economics of that pay off.

I couldn't justify buying one over a GTI.

Ah so you are partial to drop tops...

The NSX is an awesome car, I'm not sure how you can say that. What used, closed roof, sports car would you rather pay $30-40K for and depend on to get you to work every day?
