The front end was good enough it gets used in lots of retromods.

Yeah, it's amazing to see how many Mustang II front ends you see at car shows. It's probably one of the most popular cars in the aftermarket, and you never even see them. Just the suspension.

Actually saw a mechanic working on a Mustang II the other day, for some reason.

First.  My high school car was a 1969 302 fastback....known as the "sports roof".  1967, notch and sports roof, is my favorite year.

Another great thread, Vin.

Can there be any doubt of the answer?  The original generation.  Nothing beats it, man.

My uncle had one, too.  A red '65 Mustang convertible.  He was in high school at the time.  But he had to sell it because it was a stick shift, and he lost his right arm to cancer when he was 20.  After that, he got a Chevy Malibu.

First gen. I flirted with buying a '66 about 8 years ago.

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

Sweet, man.  What kept you from buying it?

My neighbor's son used to have a '68 Cougar.  Man, I loved those cars.  I loved how the turn signal blinker moved from inside to out when the signal was on.  I tried to buy one of them when I first got my license (1978).  At that time, they were just old cars, not yet classics, and I couldn't find one in decent condition.

Spent too much of the money I was saving for it, which I needed for college anyway. Also even if I had the money, I would have been leery about moving halfway across the country in a 40-year old vehicle. It was a beauty though: deep blue on top of a blue leather interior, not restored to original condition but a really nice restoration job nonetheless. It was in immaculate condition and selling for ~$15K.

Wow, just me so far for the 05-09 model?

I am partial to this model as I had one.  The reason why is when I got this car on April 17, 2005, the response from one and all...young people, old people, women, police, etc...was something that I will never forget.  One of the first in my city, i never knew that a 30K car could make me feel  like driving an exotic.  Wherever I parked, there was a crowd.  Okay I lowered it and had rims too, but still, the impact of this model was, in my opinion, without equal since the original.

I love the new one too.  I had a 99 GT which, funnily enough I also picked up on April 17, 1989.  I loved that car as well and it was well liked but it was a dramatic change from the previous.   I think every car enthusiast, once in their loves, should own of these or any pony/muscle car.

now THAT must've turned a few heads back in '89!

Oh I love the '05-'09, but with regards to performance, the new one absolutely destroys that car and they look very similar.  Despite the 100 horsepower disadvantage, it would be a helluva decision for me to chose between a Shelby GT and a 2011 GT.

It was a great car.  I loved it.  But I think everything about it was improved by the 2011 model.

Oh, without a doubt...I almost went for another 3yr tour of duty with the 2011.  The visual statement or impact from the 2011, since it was an evolution, doesn't compare to the hysteria, the price gouging, the "gotta have" of when the 2005 debuted.

They were packing it full of dynamite, so they could blow it up and more easily get to the suspension.

I want to try to run down the guy who bought mom G-ma's 'stang from my aunt a few years back.  Would be nice to get it back in the family.  Red '66 coupe, 289, 4spd, etc.

Sounds just like the one I had way back when.

I had 3 1970 Mustangs, a Sportsroof version that I autocrossed, a Mach 1 drag car and a BOSS 302 that never actually got completed before someone offered me what I thought was too much money to keep it at the time. Kick myself for that one.

I like the looks of the '05-09 Mustangs more than the new ones, and the performance isn't that much different. They are the first Mustangs since the '70 fastbacks that I liked enough to want to buy new, and now I have one. So you could say I voted with my wallet.
Like a fine Detroit wine, this vehicle has aged to budgetary perfection...

The performance is dramatically different starting in 2010 and even more so in 2011.  I really love the overall styling of the '05-'10 better, but I like the front end of the new car better.  But because of the 100 extra horsepower and the handling improvements I have to pick the 2011.
