What automotive convinence option can you not live without?

lol, that reminds me of a kid at WyoTech who left his transmission in gear with the car pointed towards a hill.  Thinking he was clever, he hit the remote start while he was still in class.  When he came out, he found his car nose-down at the base of the hill. :wtf:

Hydraulic disc brakes are super nice to have, as are radial tires, but I really don't think I could live without floorboards.

You have remote start in a stickshift car?  You're comfortable leaving your car parked with just the handbrake?
Quote from: thecarnut on November 27, 2011, 06:47:18 PM
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I always leave the car in gear which means remote start wouldn't work (I think).

Opps, meant keyless ignition.  But I almost always leave it with just the handbrake.  It works just fine.  Only keep it in gear when I'm on the steepest of inclines.

I don't get the point of those. Still takes effort to push a button; not much less than turning a key. I guess it'd be nice to leave it in your pocket,  but then I'm more apt to forget where it is. Do they have some sort of way to prevent you from locking the key in the car, like if you leave it in the cupholder by accident?

Just seems like more of a toy to me; fun but not necessary.

MrH

The car won't lock if you leave it in there.

You will realize immediately you don't have your keys when it doesn't start.

Oh, keyless ignition on the Miata sucks though.  It's not even pushbutton.  You still do a turning motion with the "key" in the ignition.

The advantage is being able to keep your keys in your pocket. My pockets are always full of stuff that my keys get tangled in, and when it's raining I have a bag in one hand and an umbrella in the other, so I really appreciate not having to dig for keys to get in and out of the car.

Sounds like a personal problem.  Keep less shit in your pockets.  Try this system:

Front Right:  Keys, lighter, loose change, small bills
Front Left:  Cell phone, cigarettes
Back Right:  Wallet
Back Left:  Matches

And you don't smoke, so you should have even less shit to carry around.

Also, umbrella?  It's just water dude, you're not going to melt.

Simple question.

For me? Cruise control. Give me manual locks, AM-FM stereo, manual windows, but I HAVE TO HAVE my Cruise Control. It's so satisfying to set the cruise to 5 over the speed limit, and crank up the tunes.

For me:

Electric starter.

These are things I need to be able to grab quickly. It's never been a problem. But it's been easier whenever I don't have to fish for keys.

Cookie Monster

You should get one of those key hooks/carabiners and hook your keys off of your belt buckle. That's what I do so grabbing keys is always easily within reach.

That's what I do. I have my keys hanging off my belt hooks, cell phone in my right front pocket, wallet in my right rear pocket and a pen in my left front pocket.

You're just asking for someone to steal your keys off your belt.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing.  You could get quite a kick-back on those cranks if the engine backfired .

+1, but i'm surprised a lot of you can actually live without power steering.  On small cars, sure.. but with the heavy boats we have today.... god, i'd hate to try to make a 3 or more point turn with them.

I'd keep electric starter and A/C

I hook my carabiner to my pocket, so the keys are inside the pocket.

I meant the belt loops on your pants, not the belt itself. And I use the first loop on the left so I can still hang the keys into the left pocket, but the pocket is still deep enough that the keys don't touch anything else in there.

I know for a fact that Nissan vehicles have a switch under the button or on the column. I drove a Murano where the push-button start didn't work.

I'm sure most do. But I can't find half of them. If you ask me they all suck. I lose that fucking credit card key 2 times a month. I never lose my real keys.
