Give me your thoughts on a Porsche 944S

Without a doubt the C2 is the best bet mentioned in this thread (hardtop only IMO). Thing is even a decent original is going to be WAY more expensive than any of the cars mentioned here or elsewhere in his OMG WHAT ABOUT THIS GUYS threads. A decent original 327/365 would nuke his budget.

I however would advise against a collector/numbers matching car. Perfect for his budget is a resto mod that more or less keeps the exterior styling (sans side pipes) but is updated with a modern power plant (a stock 327/365 is a very difficult motor to own and drive).

Googling shows there are numerous such examples; such as LS2 swaps + AT so even MiataJohn can actually drive it.

Well, I obviously think the 944 is an awesome car. :lol:

But if I was looking for what I think John is looking for, I would be more drawn to the Dino or Esprit (or C2 'Vette...).

If this porsche was an option I would go with a 928, to me, one of the sweetest sounding V8s of all time.


Early cars were 2.5 L, S was 2.7 L, S2 was 3.0 L.

928 GTS might be cool.

944 is not really the same car as the 924. 944 has a wider track, Porsche suspension, and Porsche-only Porsche-designed Porsche-built engine. The 924 had a half VW engine.

Random thoughts on the above posts.

240-260-280-300Z's do nothing for me.  

Acura or Honda (same thing really) does nothing for me.  

63-67 Corvette.  Nice but you can't drive one and park it on the street without worrying about it being taken.

XJS V12?  The early 90's AJ6 models were much better cars.  XJS's just aren't that attractive to me.  

Cars from the 30's I really find attractive.

I like the looks of the pagoda Mercedes, I had a friend who owned a 250.  It wasn't that much fun to drive, IMO.

The red Mustang that was posted is great, but it would have to be a convertible.


Cars I'd consider (a list open to changes):

Lotus Europa
Lotus Esprit
64-67 Mustang
65-67 Corvair convertible
Fiat Dino Coupe or Spider
Porsche 944S
66-67 Ford Fairlane convertible
Ferrari Mondial
Something interesting from the 30's
Bricklin SV1
Maserti Merak
Jaguar Series II Roadster, a driver; no surprises, I know these cars inside and out.  Not a show car; been there, done that, have the trophy wall as proof.


On the fringes:
68-69 AMC Javelin. Would be better if they had made a convertible version.
65-66 Pontiac 2+2 convertible.  Replace the engine transmission with a modern wrecker yard GM V8 and transmission and modern engine management system
Factory 5 Cobra look alike.  Looks like fun but I might be setting myself up for disappointment.


A thought, but probably would be the perpetually uncompleted project:
72-73 Ford Pinto hatchback.  Pull the drivetrain.  Turn the engine bay into a trunk and fuel tank area.  Gut the car from behind the front seats back.  stiffen what's left.  Drop in a Ford front wheel drive V6 as a mid engine.  Probably never work but it would be a fun experiment.

Personally, I might have choose a 928 for my next funmobile.

The design is really timeless and still looks modern today. The fact that it is 9the 11s obscure brother is a bonus to me.

On Johns list: the Merak is really beautiful and is a bit underapreciated, imo.

One of my clients has one with an Italian market engine cc tax 2.0 V6 special. Hopefully we'll do a shoot this summer. I'm not crazy about the design, but it's definitely a special car.

I think I saw that same picture in the recent Hemmings Sports and Exotic car mag.
