Well, the M5 is here. My partner did get it :)

So, best case scenario played out. He paid about 45K for a 2008 car with 17K miles that when new was 110K.

We went out today for a quick spin and I finally drove it.

The complaints about smoothness when in auto mode are wildly overblown. It shifts fine - not as seamless as a true auto but vey smooth still. Now, in full attack mode is very easy to shift smoothly just by lifting off the throttle a bit between shifts (as you would in a true manual). Got the hang of it after two tries.

It mostly feels like a bigger, slightly more powerful and clumsier M3. As expected.

I loved the heads-up-display. That thing is super cool. The garage at the office is now cooler. With 3 M cars there at any one time (out of 7 parking spaces!)

Nice! I have loved the couple that I have driven. I have actually heard much better things about the SMG cars than the M/T ones, which were carry-overs from the E39 and didn't allow you to fully disengage the electronic nannies.

Oh, and they sound like race cars with the right exhaust. Definitely a cool car. Get it from your partner if you get a chance.
Difficult takes a day, impossible takes a week.
