But when you get right down to it the Qashqai, Rogue and X-Trail do the exact same thing. They're all about the same size, they have similar powertrains, etc.
The Qashqai is positioned to compete against the Renault Scenic, Ford C-Max and Vauxhall Zafira, whereas the x-Trail is seen much more as SUV, and competes against the Freelander and the RAV4. Qashaqais are sold with 1.5 to 1.8 litre engines, whereas the x-Trails come with larger diesel engines and higher prices. The Pathfinder and Murano are sold in the UK, though sales of the latter were the grand total of 13 last year (the Pathfinder did rather better at 755), and that was after a 2.5 DCI model was made available!

The Qashqai is made in Britain, though not sure that is a criteria for many buyers these days.

Why the Rogue as well? Well, I believe it is based on a different platform, supposedly more atuned to the demands of US customers.

Ref the success of the 3 series, I was looking at this, as it appeared to sell far more strongly than the Audi. However, if you combine A4 and A5 sales, which is fair since the coupe, convertible BMWs are added to the saloon and touring, then the Audi gets pretty close to the BMW in UK sales, and would be the 9th best seller in the UK.

For Europe's aversion to the SUV, I'm a little confused as to why the Quashqai does so well.

First, you spelled it wrong. It's "Qashqai".

Second, the Qashqai is sold and marketed as a FWD Crossover here, not an SUV. AWD is optional and rarely ordered according to AMS.

Third, it's spacious and relatively good value.  :ohyeah:

Australia must be the only market in the world (as well as Japan) where a Mitsubishi is in the top ten. And in this case a Mitsubishi barely made the top ten!

Found a list of the top 30 in Canada last year:

1. Ford F-series (96,325)
2. Dodge Ram (64,297)
3. Honda Civic (55,090)
4. Dodge Grand Caravan (53,406)
5. GMC Sierra (46,680)
6. Hyundai Elantra (44,970)
7. Ford Escape (44,248)
8. Chevrolet Silverado (40,523)
9. Mazda 3 (37,224)
10. Toyota Corolla (36,663)
11. Chevrolet Cruze (33,900)
12. Dodge Journey (29,021)
13. Volkswagen Jetta (26,749)
14. Ford Focus (25,736)
15. Honda CR-V (25,076)
16. Hyundai Santa Fe (24,121)
17. Chevrolet Equinox (22,468)
18. Hyundai Accent (22,280)
19. Toyota RAV4 (21,550)
20. Ford Fusion (18,404)
21. Ford Ranger (16,381)
22. Hyundai Sonata (16,343)
23. Jeep Wrangler (15,636)
24. Ford Edge (15,633)
25. Kia Sorento (15,105)
26. Toyota Matrix (14,895)
27. Nissan Versa (14,497)
28. Hyundai Tucson (14,309)
29. Nissan Rogue (14,191)
30. Kia Forte (13,984)

Canada is almost certainly the only market in the world where the top-selling GM product is a GMC, and a GMC is in the top 10.

Also note that the Honda Accord, a perennial best-seller in the US, doesn't even crack the top 30 in Canada. Nor does the Nissan Altima.

Notice too the distinct lack of minivans other than the Caravan. In fact the next closest minivan is the Sienna, of which Toyota sold 10,835 units in 2011. Of the entire minivan market (incl. the Mazda 5, Kia Rondo and Chevy Orlando, which are not really in the same class but let's include them anyway) the Caravan alone has a market share over half (53,406/94,257). A lot of this popularity needs to be attributed to the Caravan's price starting at $19,995 (the exact same as the Orlando and Rondo).

As a side note, some sales info on 'boutique' small cars like the Smart Fortwo, Mini and Fiat 500, as well as Scions:

Fiat 500 (5,392)
Mini (3,592) (all Minis exc. Countryman)
Scion tC (2,045)
Smart Fortwo (1,851)
Mini Countryman (1,563)
Scion xB (1,529)
Scion XD (1,138)
Scion iQ (8)

Total sales by brand:

Fiat (5,392)
Mini (5,155)
Scion (4,720)
Smart (1,851)

Fiat, back only a year, with only a single product, outsells the entire Mini and Scion brands.

Electric cars and hybrids:

Toyota Prius (1,581)
Toyota Prius V (553)
Honda CR-Z (517)
Chevrolet Volt (275)
Honda Insight (242)
Nissan Leaf (170)

Another wrinkle compared to the US market: the Smart Fortwo outsells the Toyota Prius in Canada. In the US Toyota sells well over 100,000 Priuses a year and Mercedes-Benz sells only a few thousand Smarts.

Given it's lucarative sales in the UK, it should be called the Nissan CashCow!

That nickname is indeed often used.

Qashqai is the name of a southern Iranian tribe.

The name "Rogue" sounds badass and manly and like it is powered by a V8. Perfect for America.

The "Qashqai" sounds like a pussy, girly and like it is powered by a 0.4-l two-stroke 2-cylinder engine. Perfect for Europe.

Interesting to see the dominance of Nissan in Mexico. If not for our stupid ass crash standards cars could be much cheaper. I think many Americans would be OK with beign able to finance a brand new car for $8000 even if it wasn't the latest/greatest.

Mexico has its own weird version of H&H. Our market was closed to all imports from about 1970 to 1994. Only locally produced cars were available. For those 24 years all we had was a few models from GM, Chrysler, Ford, VW and Nissan. Those 5 brands thus have this H&H in Mexico. GM, Nissan, and VW are usually fighting for top spot, with Ford and Chrysler not that far behind.

2011 was particularly good for Nissan, but it?s really a 3 horse race for the top spot.

Now our market is probably one of the most open in the world and has been for more than a decade now. But still there is a lot of inertia for the 5 leaders due to that historical factor.

I am not that sure about that. Your interest rates are so much lower than ours that monthly payments end up being about the same in the U.S. for a much better car.

It still baffles me as to why Nissan designed two different cars that occupy the same market segment.  As usual, it seems America gets the worse of the two versions.  It's bad enough when GM and Ford screw us like this (ie: build a very good Astra for everyone else but give the Americans a shitbox Cavalier) but now the Japanese are doing it to us.  (Think brilliant space-age Euro Civic versus de-contented and dumbed-down North American Civic)

I mean, why waste money and rescources designing and building two different cars when one will do?

Does anyone see why these two should be different?  I don't.

Our Civic is more closely related to the JDM Civic than the Euro is.  And our Si is most likely better than the Euro Type R (Unless you?re talking about the stupidly expensive Mugen versions).  Our Civic is better than the Euro and I haven?t read many great things about the new one just as I haven?t read many great things about our new one.  Although, I totally welcome the Euro Civic coming over as I think it looks awesome.

2o6

The European Civic (hatch) is the dumbed-down variant, not the US version. The EU civic uses parts from the simpler Fit, (most notably, the cheaper and simpler twist-axle versus the multilink setup on the sedans) and the EU may look a bit more interesting (its hideous) but it's just as cheap and bad as the one we get.

cawimmer430

It doesn't matter how crappy our Civic might be. The best-selling Honda here? The Jazz (Fit). The worst? The Legend (Acura RL).

Speaking for Canada, the RL is also an incredibly poor seller. Doesn't help that it's $65,000+ and no (discernibly) better than a TL. Honda sold 56 RLs in Canada last year. This year, through to the end of the month of January, they hadn't sold a single one yet.

EDIT: Other losers for the month of January include the Honda Insight and Porsche Boxster, of which their manufacturers only sold three examples each, and the Mercedes-Benz B-class which one (1) solitary Mercedes-Benz customer in Canada decided to buy in January.

Boxster is understandable. Nobody buys a convertible in January in Canada.

According to the Focus, the Honda Legend was a good car with lots of features. But the price and the lack of a diesel killed it in Germany. Plus, Honda was known for cheap but high quality economy cars. A fully-loaded luxury car simply confused buyers and those who could afford one spent their money on a prestige badge.
