Interesting stuff. I was scared the 3.8 wouldn't beat its performance benchmark in specs (E46 M3) but it basically matched it. Sounds like they improved it in key areas too

Scared?
Yep, just like the "deception" of "FOG technology" is "too much for you to bear".

Some Hyundais weren't putting out the performance their specs suggested... being that this is their performance halo car it was imperative that this perform well. I wonder if the 3.8 8AT will be faster. They said the manual mode is pretty responsive/obedient.

I don't like being lied to.  But it's good that Hyundai is matching performance to their spec sheets now.  Though I still can't get excited for this the way I am for the BRZ.

The FT86/BRZ is prob the most appealing car to come out in the last 5, maybe 10 years. To me at least

Hmmm it seems like the GC's price jumped by 2 grand.

That's kinda a shame, because that is a pretty good sized hiked for a car at this price point, and really I have a hard time justifying it over a 370Z or Mustang now.

They had to do that so the base Genesis Coupe wasn't the same price as the Veloster Turbo.

They need to drop in the 5 liter with 400+ hp as an SS/mustang GT competitor.

I think it would really throw off the balance of the car...

I noticed that in C&D's writeup.  Granted, the base model is making something like 37% more power and the direct injection engine is surely more expensive than the old regular fuel injection motor.

How so, it is already a 53/47 % f/r, a bit more on the front won't end the world much like the 55%/45% GT500.

Hell the BRZ that you guys cream over is nothing to write home, coming in at 54/46, and somehow it is the pinnacle of automotive achievement.

But look at the ginormous power (and technology) bump in the MY2011 Mustang engines and there wasn't any material price increase...

I would be pretty happy with a garage of a GTI four door and a BRZ.  Or a Civic Si (last gen) and an open top car.  I'll stop here before I go further off topic.

Have trouble seeing anyone cross shopping pony cars with a suped-up Genesis coupe. A Genesis 5.0C would be much more targeting near-luxury import coupes like the G37 or 335iC or maybe bargain M3 shoppers.

Balance is more of an issue when cars get heavier. This with a V8 would either be very heavy or very nose heavy

I bet the difference in weight between the V6 and the V8 is 100 lbs or less and the difference in weight of the entire car would be 150 lbs as it is in the Mustang and Camaro.

SVT32V

You are overstating the case sporty, why should it be that balance gets worse with weight? There are plenty of heavy cars that handle well and this would still be in the M3 weight range.

You may not like it but it would do just fine and probably have the weight bias of a BRZ.

sportyaccordy

The Genesis has a weight distribution of 55/45 with the V6... the V8 would definitely make it nose heavier than any of its competitors (M3: 51/49, Mustang GT: 53/47, Camaro: 52/48), unless they did some extensive weight reduction on the nose (i.e. an all aluminum front...$$$$$$$$$$). I like the idea of the V8 too, hell I suggested they replace the V6 with the V8 and bump up the power in the 4 pot long ago, but now that I know how nose heavy it is I'm not so sure thats a good idea. It could wind up being like the 1st GT500.

Overweight, too.

And poor weight distribution. Anything over 50% on the front of a front-engined car is unacceptable.

Yeah.  I don't accept most cars on the road today.  Even the one I drive.
