Debris in a brand new tank?

I suppose it's plausible. I'm just not thrilled about the fact that I feel like they are doing me a favor by doing their job.

My car sat for three days running out fuel. Good thing no one flicked any cigarettes. They handed me the car back with virtually no gas.

How would it have gotten in there, though? Out of all the cars my family has owned going back to when I was a little kid, I've never heard of one having "debris" in the fuel tank. Did someone throw a bag of mulch in there or something? How does that even HAPPEN?

I've had one Cadillac where the tank apparently had a lot of dead leaves in it.

Of course, that was a thirty year old car and there was no gas cap when I bought it, and it was the old style filler tube that hid behind the license plate- and there was no license plate holder either.

So yeah, WTF?
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

My El Camino thread is only a page longer. Apparently Yarii are more interesting than my car.

Trust me: this is not the case.

Maybe they didn't feel like ordering a new tank, so they just sealed up the shop trash can and stuck it in the car.

Car overheated. (red light came on)

one of two things.

- Coolent temp sensor (car showed no signs of a failed water pump, no coolent everywhere no boiling coolent, car runs fine

- Water pump; a known failure on early cars. Luckily the pump is accessory belt driven and the part is dirt cheap. Should be a cheap fix.

Installing it might be the expensive part, depending on what they have to do.

The accessory belt comes off in literally minutes. I watched the tech do the alternator when I first got the car.

Depending on what the dealer says I may have an Indie shop look at it.

hotrodalex

Because that always works great for you.

TurboDan

Your last car and this one remind me of my Saab days. I've never heard of so many constant car issues before.

Secret Chimp

Start it and let it warm up. If the temperature creeps up without the fan kicking on, it's the sensor. If the fan kicks on and the temp keeps climbing, it's the water pump or a stuck thermostat.

Or just take it to some idiot who will randomly drill holes and throw muriatic acid in the washer bottle and god knows what else.

That's a great local brewery that we have. Do I drink their beer? No.

2o6

I don't have a temperature gauge, I only have two idiot lights; one that says the car is cold, another that says the car is hot.

I drove it home from work, no issues. When I drove it to work, it didn't flash red until I got there.

Gas tank was really a freak accident, no one had anyway of knowing that would happen. And the water pump I knew would I would possibly be coming upon soon.

I'm taking it to the Toyota dealer and see what they say.

Come to think of it, I don't think I have ever heard the fan come on when I was letting it idle or drive.

hotrodalex

Rev the crap out of it in your driveway and see if the fan comes on. Preferably on a hot day.

Anyways, I let it idle for 10 minutes (car was already fairly warm) and the fan never turned on.

Do the AutoZone code readers also capture other information from a car's computer? Maybe that could track the change in engine temperature.

Eye of the Tiger

You can get a $60 Ultragauge that plugs into the OBD2 port and can display all the actual data.
But you don't need that to diagnose this. Check the fan fuse and relay.

For sake fucks you don't need a gauge. If the light turns on and the fan never turns on, you have a bad sensor. Gauge, light, mouse fart, whatever trips when it's hot.

Yeah, I think it might be a bad sensor, but to be safe I'm still going to have the dealer check it out.

Obviously. If the fan didn't turn on and neither did the light, you're doing it wrong. One of them needs to turn on for you to learn anything about the problem. Hold the engine at a few thousand rpm until then. Idling for 10 minutes won't do anything. Some cars take more than that to warm up.

2o6

Got it back from the Toyota dealer

Fan relay and motor died.

Cost of replacement? Nearly $1000.

Screw that, I'm going to an indie shop.
