"Nooooooo! If I am paying $ 938,922,191 for a Porsche I want the Fritz who works at Porsche to build it, not the Fritz who works at VW!"

Volkswagen to start building Porsches this fall

Volkswagen still has to go over the river and through the woods before it can close the deal to take over Porsche, but this fall it will begin building them. Primary Boxster production will commence this summer at Porsche's factory in Zuffenhausen, where the 911 is also built.

Overflow production will be handled by VW at its Osnabr?ck plant, which also handles assembly for the VW Golf Cabriolet and overflow Porsche Cayman production. The arrangement isn't unexpected, with plans for the Osnabr?ck option mentioned as far back as 2010.

My Boxster was built in Finland by a contractor.  I don't think anyone will have a problem with this.

We're more mature on 'Spin.

Elsewhere the responses from readers are pretty much the same as the comment I made above.

Valmuet. They built the Think, too!

Valmet used to build Saabs, predominantly. It was originally founded as a joint venture between Saab and a Finnish conglomerate. They also built the Opel Calibra. Now they build Porsches, Think electric cars and the Fisker Karma.

Good lord, stop reading comment sections. It'll rot your brain.

Don't really see why anyone would care about this. Most automakers today are massive conglomerates that own a bunch of brands.

I'll bite. If I buy a Porsche, I'd like for it to have come from Germany.

But I seem to be weirdly drawn to intangibles...

Indeed. But then, we have just discussed that Porsches have been built in Finland before, so...

Same origin, at least. There has been a bunch of mergers and stuff, so the owners are probably different.

Yup.  I've owned four German cars and the best two were built in Finland and Mexico.

My Saab was built in Finland. Passat came from Germany. Land Rover came from the UK. My mom's new Tiguan came from Germany.

Don't know where my dad's Audi came from, but I'd assume Germany.

I always heard VW had quality control issues with the Mexican-built Jettas, but maybe they got that squared away more recently.

The issue wasn't so much with the Mexican plant as it was the horrible QC strategy they had deployed earlier.  When the 5th generation of A series cars came out, they changed their build strategy to turn every plant into a world production center.  The Jetta that I have was built on the same production line as the Jetta that made its way over to Europe.  The Golf/Rabbit was built all in Wolfsburg.  Passats in Dresden (I think it was Dresden, I can't remember).  That shored up their QC process immensely.  It was so good that I had no worries about buying a Mexican built Volkswagen.

Some trivia, the plant in question is the old Karmann plant. VW bought the pieces out of Karmann's bankruptcy.

I'm surprised you didn't have at least one Volvo made in Canada.

Didn't VW manufacture the old 914s, as well as the 356s?

93JC

#29
They made the 914. The 914 was badged as a 'VW-Porsche' in some markets:

The four-cylinder 914 was basically a successor to the VW Karmann-Ghia. Porsche designed the car and built the six-cylinder 914 themselves.

Porsche built the bodies for the 356 but all the basic mechanicals (engine, belly-pan chassis, suspension, etc.) were from the Beetle. But then again Ferdinand Porsche (Sr.) designed the Beetle, so...

The 924 was originally supposed to be VW's halo car and the 914's successor in the '70s and they contracted Porsche to do the design work, like they did with the 914, but VW cancelled the project and designed the front-drive Golf-based Scirocco instead. Porsche finished the 924 design on their own but contracted VW to build it. The Neckarsulm plant, the old NSU plant, was actually owned by Audi. The 924 used a lot of VW/Audi parts (notably the 2.0 L engine). The purpose of the 944 was actually to remove the VW/Audi parts in favour of Porsche parts. It wasn't until the 968 came about that the car's production was moved to a Porsche factory.
