I'm also voting to leave both here.  Get a Clio V6 Phase 2 or an EP3 Civic Type R.  Be envied by me.

Gosh there are a lot of ill-informed views about England permeating this thread.

In amongst is the "right answer".............. Mr H and Mr Alex are on the button when they say get a car over here.

It will cost you a certain amount to ship a car here and make it UK road legal. You will also have to ship it out of the country at the end of you stay, as if you wanted to sell it here, there would be import duty payable, so it is not going to make financial sense to bring something over, especially if you can get the self same thing, and with right hand drive in the UK. As far as an MX5 goes, that is certainly the case, as there is a good supply of models of all ages and prices......... and if you want something else, then plenty of other things to choose from, too.

AF ships it for free.... converting the car will be about 200-300 pounds.....

So $$$ wise, it comes down to paying $400 for converting the US car.... or whatever the $$$ is for the depreciation when I sell the British car.

He can get fuel on base for US prices and the Mustang isn't that big (same size as a Mondeo).

I must have missed that part about the cheap fuel (you lucky bastard!).

Well if you can get cheap gas at a US Army base in the UK, then by all means live the American Dream in Europe! GET THIS!

^Think of all the girls you can fit into that thing!^  :praise:

Quote from: MX793 on April 08, 2012, 07:06:11 PMThat said, since the Miata was actually sold in Europe, finding Euro market bits like rear fog lamps and side signals would probably be easier than on the Mustang.  Although, considering the weather, a fixed roof might make more sense.  The larger trunk and the possibility of carrying more than one other person adds a level of practicality to the Mustang as well.

I'm not to familiar with the Miata engines we got in Europe but I know that we got a bunch of weaker engine options. The weather in the UK isn't that bad. Months like April and May are rainy but the summers can be very beautiful and a cloth top is more than adequate, provided it's been maintained and fixed as they tend to wear with age.

You will have a plethora of tasty Euro-only machinery to choose from, and at giveaway prices when bought used too.  You know, the sort of fantastic stuff those of us stuck on the wrong side of the Atlantic can only dream about?  Why waste a golden opportunity to sample some of it?

You can always pick up a Mazda MX-5 or a Mustang over here when you get back.  But when will you have another chance to drive a hot Renault, a VXR tuned Vauxhall, a mid-engined MG TF, or any number of other wonderful cars with the steering wheel on the proper (right) side!

I say go native and buy local.  You will never regret it!

You actually make a very good point. I was all about the novelty of owning a 5.0 Mustang in the UK, but that's very true- when else will you be able to own something like a French hot hatch?

Now that's a good idea.......... get a 916 series Spider (the one that they made from 1995 to about 2003). They are not big money, and there are plenty about.

We don't get shipping for vehicles... instead we get storage expenses for up to 2 vehicles, one vehicle + boat or camper, etc. There are also reimbursements for buying another car overseas, but I'm not exactly sure what those are. Therefore it would be a no-brainer for me, but I understand the difficulty you're facing. At least one car payment for a vehicle you won't even get to drive for 2 years, plus the expense of buying a car in Britain for who knows how much, plus taxes and whatever banking rules/fees that entails. Personally, I think I'd store both cars, and get something dirt cheap over there (no loan). Maybe a nice old Clio or something.

cawimmer430

He'll get storage space for two cars? Sweet. Here's what to get.

No car payments... but these cars are my babies.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to roll with the Miata.  I just don't want to get over there and drive a crap box when I have two nice cars... and I don't want to buy a nice car and take a hit in depreciation.

If you buy used the depreciation won't be as extreme. You can get some pretty nice cars for dirt cheap prices in the UK.
