The roadster or the ratty Baja behind it?

Because if it weren't for a few very minor differences, I almost thought that one was mine.

When I was 8 or 9, I had decided that this is the car that I just had to have when I grew up.

Roadster. Was yours a roadster or ratty Baja?

A ratty Baja. I actually had two, in succession. That looks like the first one. The Beetle roadster idea was kind of an unknown thing to me at the time I was going through my aircooled nazi car phase. I'm sure somebody out west was doing them in the mid '90s; but nobody around here was.

And I sure hope that satin black baja off to the right isn't a real oval window.

Looks like it. Unless someone did quite a bit of fab work to swap one in.

There were, at least while i was into them, kits that could be bought, but they amounted to cuting out quite a chunk of the back of the car and welding the new panel in.

if this is a copy, its pretty cool, and impressive.

If its a real oval- OMGWTF?

Not everyone gives a shit about the arbitrary value placed on a window shape. Whatever it is, it is an improvment.

true, but if you have an oval window and want to do a baja conversion: the smart thing to do would be to sell the oval for ginormous monies to somebody who does care about these things, and then buy another later, more common model.

I know some might question the Mark IV, since it did have a family of Gremlins living under the hood, but in the end I think it did have a huge impact on mainstream cars as a whole. It set a new standard for the entire fit and finish of the car, from panel gaps, to the interior materials to the jewel like make up of the headlights. It embarrassed cars much more expensive. It also had a huge engine lineup from 75 to 241hp. It, together with the Passat and the A3 led the mainstream invasion of the diesel engine. At least in Europe.

Err, not really........... the diesel engine was well in its ascendancy long before this. You could say that the XUD 1.9 turbo in Peugeot/Citroen of the mid 1990s was the first acceptable diesel, closely followed by the E36 3 Series 325d and td. Every diesel thereafter just added more momentum, aided and abetted by fiscal benefits of derv power. For sure the VW and Audi products you cite played their part, but they were far from the sole instigators.

I would say the accent of the modern diesel engine started with Pi?ch at Audi in the 80s, and he later forced the issue at VW. For sure there were diesels before that (the old Mercedes ones among others), that were somewhat  successful. However it was only with the VW AG products in the late 90s where diesels reached 50% penetration.
