May be true for the German market. Not true for other European markets - France was already there thanks to the excellence of the diesel that started off in the 305 and Talbot Horizon but which made it good in cars like the Citroen ZX and Peugeot 306, along with the 405/406, the Xantia etc.

Oh man, so many.

Corrado VR6 probably takes the cake.  But....

MkIV R32
MkV R32
Scirocco R
Golf V GTI
Golf R
Karmann Ghia
Jetta V Wolfsburg 2.0T ( )
MkI GTI
MkII GTI
Phaeton
B5 Passat
B6 Passat
California (recent model)
Lupo GTI 6 Speed
MkVI GTI
MkV GT (twincharge)

And there are probably more that deserve honorable mentions that I can't remember quite this moment.

Formal protest.

The Golf machine is one of the best selling cars in the EU, and in the world. Even in countries like Canada Golf TDis are not that rare. The early 305s diesels did not sell that well, though to be fair neither did cars like the early Golf diesels. If you ask me to name a non-German car company that helped put the diesel on the victory lane, then I would say it was Fiat, which invented the common rail tech.

I miss my Karmann Ghia. Of the current crop of VW's, I'd take a Scirocco R and CC.

Whoops.  I didn't get enough sleep last night, clearly.  That was only meant to be on there once.

This was basically my first car:

I loved it even with less than 100hp.

My first new car was a 1990 Golf. Sold it in '98 with over 320,000 kms on it. Great little car.

I should add that there was one area where the french were ahead in diesel technology, and that is clean diesel. If I remember correctly they had the first cars with soot filters back in the late 90s. This was one area where the German companies slept in late.

The Mark IV R32 tops my list, I think. An impossibly handsome car with a very naughty engine stuffed under the bonnet, and a degree of maturity, class and restraint in its details. Special mentions to the Beetle (original, not the gauche New nonsense) and the B5.5 Passat.

There were, at least while i was into them, kits that could be bought, but they amounted to cuting out quite a chunk of the back of the car and welding the new panel in.

if this is a copy, its pretty cool, and impressive.

If its a real oval- OMGWTF?

I had the shell of a Split window bug that had rotted front apron, missing rear apron, no glass, and missing doors and pan. I wanted so bad to build a baja out of it and then tell people it wa built from a totally restored example... If the Baja above isn't a kit, I'll bet it was built from a torn up shell. There are a lot of those available.

As for my favorite VW, it's a toss up betwwen the Air cooled Beetle and the early Scirocco.

Like a fine Detroit wine, this vehicle has aged to budgetary perfection...

Love those, too. Mine had the Golf cabrio nose grafted on:
