I once had the "pleasure" of driving a 1991 Seville just like the one in 2o6's photo.  Words can not describe how awful it was!

Wimmer and Colin, any issues with the navigation/multimedia interface?  I've sat in one once before, and honestly, it's one of my favorite interiors, hands down.  The issue a lot of reviews have is the sluggish navigation unit.  What are your thoughts on it?

Btw, I already PMed Wimmer.  I'm going to be in Germany from the Sept 17th until Oct 7th.  Unfortunately, I'm not visiting London this time (maybe next year, I loved that city), but if you end up in Germany at any time during my stay, I'd love to grab a beer again!

I had little interaction with the navigation system but it seemed ok overall. I only programmed in a street with Colin's help and the navigation system was fast to respond. There was no voice but just a line and arrows on the map showing you were to go.

XJ would definitely be my choice if I were looking about luxo-barges. Just sooo sexy, especially the interior.

I'd have to paint that c-pillar body color, however. Or just get a black car.

Colin

Sorry, guys, but I am going to be in US most of the time that MrH is in Germany, otherwise it would have been great to meet up again.

The navi system in the XJ was pretty good. Easy to use, and yes, there was a voice - a very British sounding female accent! It also projected the next instruction to the dial that showed the fuel level/water temperature, which meant you did not have to look to the main display screen. Still not got the report written, but it will be very positive when it is (unlike the MINI First that I had in Spain  - that was a truly awful car in just about every respect, all the MINi weakneess and no fun to drive thanks to the weedy engine).

back in 1990 at the age of 17, I drove my uncles cadillac seville.  i loved that car.  it looked sweet on the outside and inside and the 8 cylinder engine made it feel at the time for me real fast and quiet.  the tires looked "thick" and cool.  mostly at the time i was driving a 4 cylinder POS chevy celebrity or 6 cylinder mercury sable so you kind of know what i was coming from.  i had never driven any german luxury cars or american sports cars so i had very little to compare.

why was it such a piece of junk for its time?

nickdrinkwater

Nice review, but the more I see of these on the road the more I dislike the styling.  I'm not just talking about the rear 3/4 view, the whole thing is odd looking.  The nose is just OTT in my eyes.  I know Jag had to change their look because the old model wasn't selling etc etc but the car looks massive on the road and completely lacks the elegance of an A8 Audi or 7 Series BMW.  These are going to date really quickly and that goes for the interior too.  No doubt they are great to drive however and I wish JLR every success in selling them.

Sweet. Will read it later. Have to go to bed now. Big shoot for Auto Classic tomorrow: Fiat 500 vs Goggomobil (TS250 I assume) vs NSU Prinz.

After a lot of sleuthing, we believe that we have disinfected TheMotor and you should be able to get in there without getting nasty warning messages about malware.

An aunt had a late 80's Seville.  Even as a young child, I couldn't help but notice how fucking awful it was, and it wasn't even that old - something like 40k on the clock when I first rode in it.  I only remember that because I found the digital instrument cluster to be quite novel, but even that was rubbish.  Half of it was faded out to the point where you couldn't read it.

Seriously, between the fake wood, the cheesy upholstery, the piss poor build quality (which car had the cardboard trunk liner?), the chronic rust problems, the anemic engine and the bland as Tofu styling I'm surprised GM didn't die and burn in Hell.  What an affront to humanity - to what we have accomplished.  What a travesty.

You would have been what....six? Seven?

When I was six, I thought every car on the road was awesome, and they all had V6'es.

You're exaggerating, again.

No, I'm not exaggerating, asshole.

I thought the same thing about my dads shitty Chrysler LHS, circa 1994.  Everything about that car was mediocre.  A year after he bought it the weatherstripping in the sunroof started to leak, which in turn caused the glue holding the headliner to the roof to sag.  The center console felt like it was held on with tacks, the revolving ashtrays in the rear doors always popped out, the carpet felt and looked like gray astroturf, the trunk latch failed (necessitating a bungie cord tie down) by 10,000 miles and there was an electrical short in the seat motor on the passenger side which not only meant the a few of the seat motors needed to be replaced, but the dickheads at the dealership wouldn't fix it under warranty because they claimed the water leakage from the failed sunroof liner made it's way down the b-pillar, underneath the seat bottom, and because my dad didn't address it fast enough, it was his fault.

So yeah, I remember enough from then to make a decent judgement on what sucked and what didn't.  Her Caddy sucked ass, and his LHS wasn't much better.

When I was about that age I got to see a wide range of cars. There were clear Gulfs inquality between an Olds Cutlass Supreme and a Honda accord for example. I still remember the small of the leather in a new W124 vividly, from 24 years ago. Things make impressions.

Yeah, back when I was 5-6ish my dad had an Audi and my mom had a Pontiac. Even as a little kid, there was no contest.
