Spotting new police cars.

Raza

Every single basic spec American sedan looks like a police car now.  Impala, Malibu, Charger, et al.  You have to be a lot more careful these days.

I guess one of the nice things about being in a natural disaster zone is that there is zero speed enforcement. The Garden State Parkway was a 90-100+ mph free-for-all today when I was on it. If only I still had a vehicle capable of safely doing that...

That would be awesome.  I accidentally hit 100 today and cops were all over the place.

Saw a new Taurus cop car parked next to a regular Taurus.  Black steel wheels made it very obvious but there were other things I noticed that also gave it away, like a really simplified front bumper.

It'll be tough to know when one is behind you at night, though. The CV had very distinctive headlight patterns.

Tave

I've been getting psyched out a lot recently by civilians in Chargers. They seem to have replaced the Vic as the new go-to patrol vehicle.
As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me.

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

As a fig leaf offering to a couple high ranking guys I agreed to try a couple of taurus's as test mules.  We broke one the second day (AWD) and no one wants to drive the other one after just one week.  Too small and generations behind our standard chargers for handling and power.  Fuel economy is no better then the charger v8s we use.  Smaller in pretty much every way except the trunk space is noticeably better.  Sending the broken one back on Monday and the other probably in early November as a failed test.  Next up is the Durango someone begged to try in January.

Spot on. Home town has one. Very tight inside.

I'm really disappointed that Dodge has offered up the Charger and Durango as cop cars.   I really liked the Charger R/T I drove,  and if I wasn't looking for something a little smaller with a little more luxury,  I would have wanted to buy one.   Also, the Durango is my favorite SUV right now.   There is no way I would buy either now just because of the LEO aspect.

How does the LEO aspect of it change anything?

Because now they're fleet vehicles of massive proportions.  They were already rental fleet cars,  albeit not in great numbers,  but if they are to become the choice of most police departments,  they will become the next Crown Vics.   Maybe not the Durango so much as the Charger.

2o6

Well, they had a good offering, Dodge would be stupid not to get into that market....especially since apparently Ford's new offering sucks.

SVT666

I like the method GM took and is offering LE a car the general public doesn't get so as not to tarnish the vehicle's image.   Dodge will pay on the retail side for doing this and Ford won't sell enough Interceptors to worry about it.

2o6

Dodge didn't have a model already completely done ready for that purpose. The Caprice is an older design, been on sale in other markets for quite some time.

SVT666

No kidding.  I don't care what the reasons are, I think it was a bad move.

Catman

I guess the sedan interceptor is not selling well and demand is much higher for the SUV.

Get a Charger and paint it close to police car colors. Mount a searchlight.

Watch everyone slow down and drive safe around you.   ;)

Not sure if this will come to fruition. Few civilians bought the CV because it was an old, inefficient, rather ugly boat. And it had the image of being used as a taxi and geriatric hauler, in addition to LE use.

The Charger is a great looking car to begin with, looks very modern, and in some ways I think the fact that it's used by LE could give it a powerful, authoritative image. It's way too big of a car for me personally (had one as a rental once) for daily driving, but for what it was, I enjoyed it when I drove it.

This new Passat in police livery was a sight I didn't expect to see.

Darien purchased a new fleet of Caprices for the PD. They look pretty good I guess.

A very wealthy town near me actually had a few Lexus LX450 police cars for a while. How they got away with that, who knows.

Seaside Heights PD actually has a high number of marked Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs on patrol, though I think they're being replaced with Explorers now. Their boardwalk patrols are mostly done in Smart fourtwos, and occasionally one will pull over a car on a regular street, which I find absolutely hilarious.

Imagine getting pulled over by one of the Smart cars.  It would be like getting your ass kicked by a 98-pound weakling.
