When did you get yours?

Back in March.

I've heard they don't work worth a damn.

I'm considering the new passport one that has a GPS that will mark the false alarms and no longer go off when you pass them.  Expensive stuff though.  V1s seem to be the standard still though.  I'm considering mounting it next to my mirror, then doing the remote display built into the mirror.  I've seen it done before, and it's really slick.  Completely off, nothing showing until you get popped, then it pops up in your mirror.  Once the alert goes away, it's completely hidden again in the mirror.

Yeah, I would say it's not top-notch.  Whistler is the brand, and it's way less costly than an Escort, but I'm guessing there are reasons for that.  For example, the LCD display can't tolerate even mild heat, and is illegible after sitting in the sun for a few hours.  It picks up a lot of false signals, but they were always in the same stretch of road, so I knew to ignore those.  Down the road something liek what you've mentioned is what I'll get.

I've got a Passport 8500i.  I've had it for...three years?

You are the second to last person I'd expect to have a radar detector.

Yeah, last speeding ticket was in '11 in NC, I was hauling ass.  I go fishing about 1-2x a year w/ a buddy of mine out of Nag's Head, and I used to fly into Raleigh (fly into Norfolk now), and that drive was just impossible to not blatantly speed on - nice smooth good roads and very little traffic.

Ooooh yeah. 64 east out to the OBX is a real tempting place to fly.

This. Plus I've gotten a total of two speeding tickets in the last decade, and I speed all the time.

There, you have bigger problems...

Is it true that in Louisiana, you can get a drink at a drive-through window?

Another reason it's good to go to college in a ghetto area -- the cops couldn't care less about underage drinking.  People I know who went to college in rural areas always had to worry about the cops being after them for drinking, but not in more urban areas.

Not in inner city Cleveland. Too many damn 25 mph zones and CPD patrols them with camera cars, regular squad cars and traffic cams.

used to.  my law school classmates who went to undergrad there could.  Now it's illegal, but no one enforces the drink driving laws.

They used to have drive-thru daquiri stands. They can't legally sell "open" intoxicants, so they put a piece of tape over the lid.

If that's no longer true, i have no reason to visit anymore.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Yeah I speed quite a bit as well. I feel like a detector would just make me speed more, which is worse for gas mileage anyways.

Kevin, it might be worth figuring out what your local departments use if you haven't already (RADAR, LiDAR, instant-on, whatever else). Most of the recent testing I've seen says that by the time you can detect LiDAR, it's too late.

I've picked up LiDAR that wasn't directed at me, either, and it can be a helpful warning.  That said, almost everyone in my area uses Ka or Ka POP/instant on, so laser is the least of my worries.

Because lidar is a straight-line beam rather than a spreading wave, there is a much smaller area over which a lidar detector will pick it up, meaning that the warning that comes, if at all, will be much shorter.

Cops around here seem to use lidar a lot.  My last ticket was lidar rather than radar.
