How could she be so adamant against that.  My wife said, "It's sexy".

No idea, she doesn't like Mazda for some reason.   She doesn't like any mid-size sedans except for the Maxima. Anything else has to have a luxury label on it.

The Mazda is the car I'd get in its segment. But.....

I see a 328i in your future. Or an ATS. Or a G (everyone has one these days). Your wife knows better.

I would say we'll be looking in the $35-40K range AWD.  Maybe another Maxima too.

Still need to car the kids around?  If no, A4.  Or maybe a Legacy?

I just convinced my roommate from Cleveland (right next to a Ford plant)  and life long Ford buyer to consider the Mazda 6. He looked at it and fell in love. His world is crashing down after he drove the fusion and saw what a disappointment it is.

My mom is pretty much down to a new Mazda 6 or audi a4. I think she's going to end up with a 6, so I'll likely end up getting quite a bit of seat time in one.

Awesome vehicle though. Value for the dollar and interior is class leading right now I'd say. Hopefully it's as impressive to drive as it looks.

Any reason why the wife shot it down? Replacing the maxima right?

I think the real reason is she has wanted an Audi for a long time and will probably get one.  If I had to guess here are some possibles

Audi A4
Audi Q5
Nissan Maxima
Lexus ES350
Infiniti G37X

The A6 is nice too but too much money.  We can afford it but that doesn't mean we want to.

You should test one of these as well:

It drives better than anything else you posted except for the G (but is a lot more practical and has a real luxury badge). It's right in the middle of your price range.

X1 xDrive 28i. Starts at 32K or so. Drives a lot better than the X3. It's basically a 3-series wagon based on the E90 platform.

Might be small, I know the Q5 is too.  We probably won't get a new car until the little one is in a booster seat. Friggin car seats are huge.

Don't buy an ES.  All biases aside, that's stupid money to pay for a Camry underneath.

But if the Q5 is on the table, what about the Allroad?  It's only like 2K more.

On no......that's a wagon. Can't have that.

I'm sure it's the fact that it won't be available with a V6. She's a keeper!

It's not a wagon, it's a low-clearance SUV.

The ES is not an Avalon. Different platforms, different cars. However, ALL the reviews I've read on the Avalon are actually almost glowing, even as it (surprisingly) concerns performance. Additionally, pretty much all reviews of the new ES says it more or less isn't as good as the Avalon in any measure; basically buy it for the badge and Lexus dealer experience.
