I hate the Juke. And can't they make an SUV that looks like a real fucking SUV? Jesus Christ....  :banghead:

Whatever...

It's clearly not an SUV.

Well yeah, that's the problem. When I was searching for an SUV last year, it was pretty much between the LR2, Xterra and Wrangler for SUVs that looked like SUVs. I picked the one that was the least bulbous. It'd be nice to have a small SUV that isn't a crossover. Do we have to wait 'til the Defender comes out? C'mon Jeep... I wanna buy American!!!

giant_mtb

I'm afraid to say that I think a "real" SUV is becoming a thing of the past, at least as far as looks go.  Hopefully vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler continue the tradition, but I'm just not really sure it's going to continue for far longer.  SUVs are no longer trucks with covered beds and extra doors in the back.  They're lifted cars with an extended cab and liftgate.

You know, I love the LR2 and all, but it is a crossover.....FWD-based transverse motor, unibody ect ect.

The real "SUV"s went out of style because no one ever really used them for that purpose. Crossovers offer nearly 100% of the function of why consumers liked them, with more accommodating interior features (unitbody chassis and construction that doesn't limit interior space and improves ride and handling)

Why style a vehicle that is so wasteful in proportions? Space exists to be used.

i find it interesting that a lot of people are incorporating into their definition of "real" suv, the "look" of it.  the looks of the new jeep are clearly polarizing but the cosmetic looks of it shouldn't have anything to do whether a particular suv is a "real" suv, other than stuff like running boards, approach angle, etc.

i predict this vehicle will be a success.  i think what was happening with the cherokee/liberty (not grand cherokee) was that it was beginning to look dated, and not in a good way.  Believe it or not, but the liberty competes with the cr-v.  And the cr-v looks like the quintessential "chick" car.  few guys buy it because it looks good.  i think driving one makes your testosterone go down.  this new liberty doesn't look like a chick car.  it doesn't look cute like the juke either.  i can't argue against downright ugly.  somehow it appeals to me.  i don't know, it looks cool.

What does a transverse motor have to do with anything?

But I was referring more to style than the underpinnings anyway. I basically wanted an SUV that didn't look "cute" or "quirky" or like a rounded-off space capsule. The options in that category are either behemoths (Tahoe, etc.) or have little in the way of luxury/creature comforts (Xterra, Wrangler, FJ).

I will say that I'm a big fan of the 4Runner and it fit most of my parameters, but it was a little too big for me. The current Liberty fit what I was looking for too, and I would've been willing to buy one, but it actually came down to the fact that there were very few Limited models in the used inventory near me and the Sport model was pretty stripped as far as features go.

Yeah, for a vehicle with "utility" in the title, you do care an awful lot about looks. And the LR2 is a cute ute.

Eh, I drive 20K+ miles a year (on road), I need something with comfort. There will always be compromises. If I could have a Wrangler (or maybe an old Disco) + a 3er, that would be ideal, but financially way more than I'd want to spend on transportation.

That said, I don't do the muddin' stuff or anything incredibly hardcore. I just like to be able to drive on the trails and old sand roads through the NJ pine barrens and on the beach to get to fishing spots miles from the nearest road. The LR2 can do all that just fine, so I'm good with it.

Looks pretty good in motion, much better than still pictures suggested. I think it might do pretty well, depending on pricing.

I really don't understand all the haterism being directed towards the new Cherokee.  It doesn't look any worse than most other small CUVs in its segment.

You really want to see an ugly Jeep?  Remember this thing?..........

I'll take the new Cherokee over this travesty every time.

There's a small but vocal minority who thinks every Jeep needs to be an offroad machine with solid axles, a manual transfer case, and that stupid, coarse 4.0L AMC inline 6.

There's not enough room in the market for more than one "real" offroad Jeep.

I disagree. I think there's room for something between the brute of an off-roader that is the Wrangler and a soft-roader CUV that can't do much of anything off-road. Many people don't find a Wrangler practical, but may still want to go off-road on occasion. For those types of people (like myself) there really aren't many options. I love the 4Runner, which kind of fits into that category, but it's too big.

I rolled the dice on the LR2 and it's eaten up everything I've thrown at it, but if I could have the same vehicle with traditional 4WD and low range, I would've preferred it.

Atomic

I see the "Subaru Tribecca" from the rear in the photo above. I actually like it from the recent set of pics but not as a Jeep. Dodge? Yes! I do think it will be a hot seller and could fit in nicely IF ONLY the remaining new Jeeps to be added are more closely aligned with the origins of the company. The newly refined JGC for 2014 is perfect, the Wrangler/Wrangler Unlimited (pure Jeeps) is awesome and the upcoming Grand Wagoneer, essentially a 7-8 passenger JGC should fit in nicely. The others? TBD.

I agree, I think car enthusiasts enjoy a bit of hysteria every once in awhile. This car is not bad looking, and people who are not need deep in car news generally tend to like it. Add to that all of the technical features, etc, I think this will probably do pretty well. The Trail Hawk looks pretty cool actually

The more I see, the more this thing smacks of Pontiac Aztek.  Particularly the front 2/3s.

Ya. What the fuck.

They build two brilliantly looking SUVs in the Durango and GC with the remodel. Now they build this. Fucking Chrysler.

Is there a boost to MPGs or something to make it worth buying? Sweet hell. Nobody is going to pay 35k for that GC. Bring on the discounts.
