I find it odd to be concerned about the weight of the FRS(and apparently nixing it due to that aspect) and then looking at equally "light" cracker boxes like the beetle.

Sorry to bring it up, just find it odd.

true.  the weight issue is a moot point between these two cars as the beetle is less than 200lbs heavier.

i sat in the FR-S, loved it, loved the way it handled, and was fast.  looked cool.
i sat in the slushbox v6 mustang, thought it sucked.  every bit of it.
i sat in the gti, felt like this was a great car, but it looked just all right.
i sat in the beetle, loved it with the only exception being the initially slow acceleration.  that's with the tdi model though.

you know if I tracked the cars, even occasionally, its a totally different set of priorities.  yeah, i know I can start but everyone knows in their heart and mind whether that's something in the near horizon or not.  For me, it's not.  It's an expensive and time intensive hobby.

i haven't decided on the beetle but I'm leaning towards it.  it felt right.

Still, the occasional drivers event or non timed(casual) autocross costs virtually nothing(50 to 150 dollars) and is a fantastic "bonding" moment for you and your car. I'd look into doing one or two of those in the next couple years, no matter what you get.

I wouldn't imagine the FRS and Beetle getting cross-shopped very often, but what do I know.

Beetle doesn't seem like as much of a F-U to aging as the FRS.

Because he's driving a bunch of cars and likes one that most of us don't?  I really don't care what he gets as long as it makes him happy.

You sound like ChrisV.

I just want him to test drive as much as he can and make his decision based on what he enjoys rather than only our suggestions.

How so? Chris would be saying the same thing as you are. Pick what you want, drive what you like and buy what best suits your needs/wants. Atleast I'm pretty sure that's what he'd say, not that I ever read any of that asses posts.

From this post it seems like you liked the FR-S more, since it handled nicely and had better acceleration than the Beetle.

No shit an FRS would have better acceleration than a TDI. He's not even comparing similar models.

The BRZ/FRS are a lot of things, fast isn't one of them.

Ok I got it. Based off of the Golf and Beetle being thrown into the mix, would a Scion tc be a consideration? Has back seats for the kids.

Scion tC is really expensive, when you factor in the cost of all the flat brim hats he's going to have to buy and wear backwards.

I was indirectly arguing that point with the Golf too.

the scion fr-s is not excluded because of the small backseats.  I was subconsciously/consciously moving away from it because of it being so small and me using it as a daily driver for an hour, much of it on the highway.

Then came the realization that really what I want is something which looks cool and handles well and is cheap to drive and maintain in 4 seasons and is a manual.  It doesn't have to be blistering quick or turn on a dime.  Mostly it's gotta look cool but not cliche.

I've decided, agreed on pricing, and just waiting for delivery.  Hopefully get it by wed or thurs.  I'll withhold saying what it is until I post pics.

Thank you!! To all contributors!!

Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Beetle ain't bad, it could have been worse.

He could have bought a mustang.

Any pics of the beetle yet?

After driving around in a 930 SC yesterday, I'd have to go with that for a possible midlife crisis car.

veeman

The exact car i want: certain color exterior and certain color interior and manual transmission = limits the number of cars available, unless i order it through a dealership from the factory.  There's only 3 on the lot available in the eastern US.  I verified this through autotrader.  The dealership which I'm working with is "negotiating" a trade of vehicles with the dealership that has the car.  Basically the car I want is a 2013 model and the dealership which has the car doesn't want to get a 2013 model in return.  They want a 2014 model.  The dealership which is selling me the car probably isn't making a large sum of money from me and doesn't want to give up a 2014 model.

This is my understanding of the situation from the carsdirect sales rep and the cause of the delay.  Its annoying but they've served me well in the past and I'll give them a few more days to work things out.

I imagine finding a pink Beetle with a manual would be hard.

True, I suspect the pink ones usually come with an automatic.

FlatBlackCaddy

Soo, what's the deal veeman?

Are you still waiting for the dealer? Unbelievable...now I KNOW he's getting a VW because nobody can screw around this much other than a bunch of potheads at a VW dealer.
