Porsche Macan

I am not sure if Porsche needs a cheap less expensive SUV, but if it allows them to bring more niche cars to market more power to them.

Although I am not really enthusiastic about Macan, there are a couple of things Porsche got right. The rear end if the best of any SUV on the market imo, the front fenders, and headlights are all one big hood, leaving one big clean surface without seams, to many gaps in the front however. Not sure about potential repair costs of the hood though.....

Macan S        has a 340 DIN hp 3.0 V6 bi turbo
Macan diesel  has a 258 DIN hp 3.0 V6
Macan turbo  has a 400 DIN hp 3.6 V6 bi turbo

The turbo runs to 62 mph in 4.6s.

I would guess the Q5, which is better looking.  But this looks pretty decent.

It a least doesn't just look like a raised Porsche car. It looks pretty darn good. Way better than the Cayenne.

They still make sports cars. I have no beef with Porsche's business plan.

It looks more like a Porsche than the Cayenne ever has. Shame about the grille, though.

FoMoJo

Very nice.  Needs a more delicate looking grille though.  What's the price range?

Since it's a Porsche, I'd guess it starts at $40,000 or so and goes up to $120,000 with options.

EDIT:  Macan S starts at $49,900, Turbo starts at $72,300.

So it's an Audi Q5 made to resemble a 911.  I'm still at a loss as why anyone would buy this over an equivalent (and cheaper) Audi.

It's prettier, and slightly nicer. It'll also drive better.

Wow, what a unique styling concept! It's like they just turned the 911 into a little SUV! This is a first for them.

Because it's boring? Because the 911 isn't even the best car they make anymore?

Doesn't the Cayenne start at $49K?  Or are they moving that upmarket?

If it were not for the Cayenne, Porsche would not be in business. So you can say what you like, but adding this car to the range, which will undoubtedly become their biggest seller, with healthy profit margins will ensure that there will still be a Porsche for the foreseeable, and we will get 911s and 918s and other delectable machines.

That said, the Macan appeals to me about as much as the Cayenne. ... ie, diddly squat.

I'm sure they'll sell 'em faster than they can build the damn things.  I'll admit it does look pretty nice.  Plus, some people will find that badge irresistible.

It's not for me, though.  When a Hyundai Tucson (ix35 to you) looks nearly as good and can do everything the "Porsche" can, I really can't see the point.

As long they use the profits from this thing to subsidise the building of REAL Porsches, I can't complain too much.

Every Porsche is a real Porsche

There are people who say the watercooled 911s are not real Porsches. They are idiots. Dont be an idiot

I priced out a Macan S at $63k the way I want it... not bad for what you get.

Lets see... trade in the JGC for $25k and be left with a purchase price of $38k - which pretty much what I did 3 years ago with the Jeep.  I am liking this idea.

Don't underestimate how much space/versatility you'd be giving up. I can't see the Macan being too much more of a utility vehicle than a five-door compact car.

The more I see this thing the more I feel SUVs have better proportions as they shrink. I saw a current Cayenne today on the stock... 18s? It just looked like ass. They need the 22s or whatever the top ones are. This one looks good out of the box and probably handles/rides well too.

I have a real soft spot for the Tiguan as well. Wifey's next car is a toss up between a Sportwagen 2.0T, the B6 Passat wagon 2.0T an a Tiguan. Though if this thing suffers typical Porsche residuals there may be a 4th contender

Ehh.. my mom has a Tiguan SEL. Is still in love with it two years after buying it. Having driven it, it's a legit vehicle. No complaints here at all.

I would love to be able to tell you all about the Macan having spent a day at the LA Auto Show.

But, the Porsche hall was closed first thing in the morning for a private function, and then in the evening it was closed again from 6 - 9pm for what I found out was so dealers could go in (even though there was a separate Macan Lounge with more cars in it, which was by invite only), so when I did get in, so did just about everyone left at the Show. Clearly pouring champagne down the dealers and press' throats on a public admission day is more important than actually letting people who might buy one have a look at the car. The lady I spoke to was embarrassed, saying that it sent the wrong signal to the public (too right!), and I did suggest that if they had at least put up a sign warning people in advance, they could have timed a visit when the hall was open to us hoi poloi.

From what I could tell, though, the Macan does look both noticeably less bulky and quite different from the Cayenne. But I can't tell you what it is like from inside, cos I never got there.

How so?

Order with the factory hitch option and you have the ability to tow a trailer and use bike and luggage racks.  Besides groceries, my JGC doesnt haul too much do to its low roof and high floor.

Order the torque vectoring option and you have a nice lockable rear diff.  Air suspension will give you 9 inches of ground clearance.  Both are better than my Jeep.  True it doesnt have the brilliant SelecTrac system but porsches traction management system is not joke.  I would be missing a low range box, but gaining much more torque and 2 more gears.

But my Jeep can not even remotely compete with a sub 5 sec 0 to 60, great handling, and 7 spd dual clutch transmission.  Nor can it match the build quality.

If Porsche had made this their first SUV, people might not have been so angry lol.

Hopefully Porsche throws its hat in the small sedan ring too. An FR baby Panamera sounds good and could probably be built off the A4 platform.
