If Porsche had made this their first SUV, people might not have been so angry lol.

Hopefully Porsche throws its hat in the small sedan ring too. An FR baby Panamera sounds good and could probably be built off the A4 platform.

I feel like that is too downmarket. I feel like Porsche is still like three steps up from Audi.

Colin

Maybe true, but all the ueber premium guys are reaching downwards, as that's where the profitable volume is........ rumours still abound that there will be a junior Panamera before too long. Think of it as a rival to the Maserati Ghibli, which is what it surely will be.

They just have to give it enough horsepower + tech and price it high enough. Look how successful the CLA is. Entry level luxury cars are the "new" handbag.

So it's an Audi Q5 made to resemble a 911.  I'm still at a loss as why anyone would buy this over an equivalent (and cheaper) Audi.

It says "Porsche" on it.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Doesn't the Cayenne start at $49K?  Or are they moving that upmarket?

Cayenne starts at $49,600. Strange.

Well, I also noticed that the bottom of the line Macan is the S model, while the base Cayenne's base model is below the S, with the Cayenne S starting at $66.8K.  But still, it seems odd to have the base Cayenne sitting so close to the base Macan unless the base Macan comes better equipped.  It will certainly perform better (more power, smaller vehicle, Porsche puts it in line with the Cayenne S).

The Cayenne S and Macan S are priced just as close in the German market, however the difference between the base price of the Cayenne turbo, and Macan turbo is over € 40.000.

Cayenne S is a fair bit more than the Macan S (you could buy a Ford Fiesta for the difference).  But Porsche offers a trim level of Cayenne below the S (at least in America).  It has no such sub-S trim for the Macan.

Too expensive.  Even the Q5 gets ridiculously pricey when you start adding options.

I made a mistake with the first part. I compared the base Cayenne with the Macan S.

The Cayenne really isn't a particularly attractive vehicle and many of the ones I see that are a few years old haven't aged well.  This one does look better.

Porsche gutted the Q5 to make this against the wishes of the VAG bosses.  85% of the Macan parts are unique to the Macan.  Its a true Porsche.

+1, this is what the cayenne should have been.

The toureg is better looking than the cayenne.

Still, a base model smaller car more expensive than the base model larger car? I think we all know the majority of people who buy cars will go for bigger when possible.

These things go in cycles. Ten years ago it was "change lanes" with the "new Mercedes" and its C230 coupe. In the '90s it was the BMW 318ti. Remember the Jag X-Type? Acura RSX? Even the original A4?

All luxury automakers occasionally come out with a new entry-lux model to experiment. Nothing really new here.

I hear you. I am kind of glad my wife got the RX350 over the Q5. Don't get me wrong, we liked the Q5 but the Lexus was cheaper and larger.  She hasn't regretted it either. Really likes it.  I think it drives, well, like a Lexus but whatever.

12,000 RPM

Yea Lexuses are pretty good values. But man... so boring. I do want to see what Lexus does with this LN-FX or whatever the fuck they are calling their Q5/X3 fighter. I think it might actually look kind of good in production form too. Lexus' predator face doesn't look anywhere as bad in person.

I agree. Looks pretty good.

veeman

they should drop the porsche cayanne and keep the porsche cayanne S as its base model.  i hardly ever see base porsche cayannes and it's not nearly fast enough to be a porsche today.

its silly when car and driver or whomever tests these vehicles offroad.  they're not meant to offroad in.  They're meant for all weather driving on paved roads.  range rover i can understand because there are some people who offroad in them.

Soup DeVille

Whether people offroad them or not, the ability to do so is often one of the claims the guys selling it make. It's not unreasonable to check them on that.
