Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6 is somewhere on American soil right now

Hey, Mercedes-Benz. I love you guys. Seriously. I recently had a blast driving your hot little CLA45 AMG for a week, but now I'm looking for something... bigger. Something a little more, shall we say, robust. Something I can use to really explore the urban Detroit landscape.

And lo, according to your Facebook page, it appears you've brought a G63 AMG 6x6 over to American soil for unsaid reasons. How convenient. I'm more than confident that its six headlock wheels wrapped in 37-inch tires, three axles, six-wheel drive and twin-turbocharged V8 would do a bang-up job of handling everything I could throw at it. And considering its top-notch interior that uses only the finest materials, I'd be able to tackle everything in the lap of indestructible luxury.

It looks as though your G63 6x6 is hanging out in the northeast right now, but listen, I'll make you a deal. Let me drive it from New York to Detroit. In fact, I'll draw a straight line between the two cities and make the 6x6 take that route. After all, this thing is more than capable. Mountains? Pfft. Neighborhoods? Ha! Lake Erie? I'll caulk the G and ford it.

You have my phone number, Mercedes. I'll be waiting...

Somebody forgot to tell Mercedes that nobody in the US ever takes these anywhere close to offroad.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Actually I would say the percentage of G class owners that actually take theirs off road is relatively high compared to the competition. Many posers are put off by the G classes relatively utilitarian interior, and poor on road performance compared to say a Range Rover.

Also at least in Europe Mercedes does still offer stripped commercial variants.

I interpreted these as AMGs. You have a point, but I'd be shocked if it held with the AMGwagens

I like how you show evidence that these do go off road by posting a picture of one in a courtyard.

I actually wanted to show evidence that they are not all pimped AMG versions.

Maybe it is better if some people do not take them offroad.

I have no doubt that these are looked at as practical vehicles sometimes in Europe.

They're not here. Here, they're mostly known as ride of choice of the Kardashians.

This thing is sorta interesting (quasi retail deployment of portage axles) but it wouldn't be worth much off road save for something very specific (carry heavy loads on deeply rutted roads/trails). In general a $30k Wrangler, Xterra, FJ Cruiser, etc., would clean its clock.

This 6x6 G class was built for the australian military. Australia bought 2146 Gs, to be delivered between 2012-2015. Not sure how many of those are 6x6.

Eventually the people at Mercedes, presumably after a couple beers to many, decided to shove a 544hp biturbo V8 into the engine bay. Australia uses a V6 diesel.

You don't want to run out of gas in The Outback!

Diesel 1 : Gasoline 0

Ehh, military utility vehicles all took a step backwards when they abandoned multifuel engines

Meh, if you run out of gas you can just ride on the back of a kangaroo or something.

The kangaroo would probably also be faster than the V6 diesel.

Why would Australian military need 2146 of these?  To protect its borders from which nation?  It seems to me if they needed vehicles to catch poachers, drug smugglers, or illegal immigrants something smaller, more nimble, and more maneuverable would be better.  Like a Toyota Hilux.

I would imagine any nation to nation skirmishes Australia would ever get involved in would be over a small island or sea borders in which naval and air superiority would win.

Yeah, but no portage axles, twin-turbo V8 or ginormous track ;).

Australia was/is involved in international missions like Afghanistan, East Timor etc. Besides combat support, I would suppose these are used for humanitarian missions, disaster relief etc.

As I wrote not all of the 2146 are the 6x6 variant. Some googling brings forth that 700 are 6x6. All in all Australia will use 7 different variants. I guess one advantage of the G class is that is has a certain level of militarization built in. Even the civilian ones have a NATO 24V power system.

Here is some more infos one the Aussi Gs.

Check again: those aren't combat vehicles.

Besides, Australia, being a commonwealth nation, is involved in alot of overseas operations; and they have regional problems in Papua/ New Guinea, and other island nations around them.

I guess this vs an American H1.

More or less, although the 6x6 version might be closer to a small M35 truck....

Apparently, somebody at Brabus didn't think the AMG version was crazy enough.

Has anybody here read the Blue Ant novels by William Gibson? This thing has Bigend written all over it.
