Tesla charging more for supercharging

https://www.engadget.com/2018/03/12/tesla-raised-supercharger-rates-across-us/

Wowzers, 24 ¢/kWh is expensive. I did the math on a Tesla Model S a while ago, and it worked out to about 2 ¢/km to charge it using my energy rate. At the time it was 6.79 ¢/kWh plus fees for transmission and distribution; actual cost was about 11 ¢/kWh all-in.

24 ¢/kWh makes the per-kilometer rate 4.4 ¢/km, which is still less than the cost of fuelling my car with gasoline (averaged 8.6 ¢/km last year), but it's getting much closer. A $45,000 BMW vs. $60,000 Tesla Model 3 becomes a pretty shitty value proposition if it's going to take you 15 years or more to make up the difference in fuelling costs...

Laconian

My brother is cheering for the sunsetting of free charging for Leaf owners. Cheap energy causes car owners to abuse a shared resource, incentivizing owners to top off their cars (that last 20% is super slow), leaving the car connected, driving even more frivolously, etc.

Shitty Leaf drivers piss him off, since he's a Bolt driver.

I don't think superchargers are supposed to be the primary tool for charging a Tesla. The vast majority of owners would do better to charge at home.

Considering the extra equipment involved, charging more for supercharging make perfect sense from a financial POV. A typical owner would only expect to use it on long trips, not daily driving. If I had the choice of a supercharging @ 0.24/kwh and a normal charger @ 0.11/kwh and I was on a trip I would take the supercharger every time.

Soup DeVille

Yeah, the supechargers are the quick fill-up option, not the everyday one.

Come to think of it, I can't remember seeing any modern car that still uses the branding script on the back. My Sonic doesn't have any "Chevrolet" script anywhere on it.

I think Toyota still uses the "Toyota" script on the back, but I think that's because Toyota's management is old and conservative. Old people don't like change.

It's not old and conservative.  It's dope.  In fact, it's so cool, the front of my 4Runner says Toyota too.

I don't know, Toyota has some fancy styling, but sometimes they feel conservative as hell. I mean, a lot of their cars still don't have Apple CarPlay. That sounds like a decision an old person would make.

MrH

The Toyota carplay thing is interesting.  They don't like the amount of control CarPlay needs to work.  They went all in on their own in house system, thinking that was a better choice and would outlast CarPlay and Android Auto.  They thought both systems were a fad.  They bet wrong and now realize these systems are not going away, so they're scrambling to get caught up but they're behind the competition by a lot.  The 2019 Avalon will have CarPlay standard, and hopefully everything new moving forward will, but yeah, they're behind.

I will say, they are conservative as hell.  But when it comes to engineering a car, I'd much rather buy a car from Toyota than someone like FCA.  They're at the opposite end of the spectrum.  They try wildly unproven things all the time, and it shows in their reliability.

Wait, is that your 4Runner? How the hell do you get away with no front plate? Whenever I would lazily roll around in any flip car or even my own personal car without a front plate, I would almost always get a ticket. Even if the car was parked and unoccupied.

I'm always afraid of getting pulled over in Wisconsin for not having a front plate.  I know they're used to seeing lots of Michigan plates coming through (ie, no front plate), but it's still a reason for them to turn around on you just to see.  Hasn't happened yet.

SJ_GTI

I don't have a front plate even though it is required here in NJ.

I did get pulled over once, but the cop just told me I am supposed to have a front plate and someone else might give me a ticket.

"WLL" = working load limit. 3/4 ton. That's 1500 lbs.  Crosby's safety factor on steel shackles is 5 to 1, so it won't actually fail until you hit 7500 lbs; but a good winch or using it as on a snap sling can exceed that.

Just so you know...

Oh, and pet peeve; that's a shackle. Its not a D-ring. Its not a clevis. Its a fucking shackle.

I was wondering what the safety factor was.  I assumed 3/4T was its rating, WLL makes sense now.  I call them shackles, don't worry.  D rings are...D-shaped.  Clevis to me makes me think of clevis pins.

Crosby, a rigging company, has the best tables and references on their site for that kind of stuff.

I haven't run a front plant on any car since 2010 when I got my Miata.  Only time it was an issue:  I got pulled over once in the BRZ.  It was a new cop, first week on the job.  He was practicing pulling people over.

He wrote me a warning because I didn't have a front plate and I still had my miata's plate on the BRZ without switching over registration.  I never put a front plate on the BRZ, Genesis, Element, nothing.

S2000 and 4Runner don't have one.  I've gotten a speeding ticket in the S2000 and never even mentioned no front plate
