Brat

Really though, the Brat and Baja are useless as "trucks"- not enough payload weight/size or towing capacity.

I'll never understand why the small trucks died. I make it no secret that I hate and despise the Ranger. Top 5 on my "go fucking burn to the ground" cars/trucks ever. But I think there's still a market for trucks that size with small engines.  Something the size of the mid 80's Toyota, Mazda or Nissan trucks. Not everyone wants or needs a huge ass truck.
I bought a Ford Courier in the '70s; a rebadged Mazda B1800.  The sheet metal rotted within 3 years.  Nice little engine though.

Meh, I don't need payload or towing. I need space and reasonable off-road ability.

I'm talking about the 1986-1993 B2000, B2200 and B2600. Perfect size and handled great for a truck. My family had two of them and you can't kill them.
Then again we don't have rust down in the south.

Bajas are SWEET but so niche. They all come with a roofrack and sunroof, you can get the bed extender rails, 4door, there is a little door for stuffing 2x4 or surfboards or whatever through into the backseat.

I would just get an Outback. Bajas are ugly and silly.

I worked with a guy that had one with a diesel.  I was a little jealous.
Ride with him as he tries to merge on the highway. That jealousy will turn to sympathy

Folks talking about the Ranger... it's too big. It's like a 95/100ths scale F-150.

I feel like this is a "brown diesel wagon" situation... much ado about nothing

The Ranger is too big? Are you high?

He's talking about the current global Ranger, not the dinky little trucklet we used to get.

The global Ranger is pretty big.  Frankly, I don't see the appeal of either but then, I'm not a truck person.

The global Ranger is ~10" longer than the longest variant of the old North American model (extended cab, long bed), and about 2 ft longer than the shortest configuration (short cab, short bed).

Length is a big deal.

Agree but you get more usable space, more passenger space, and it's certainly not 95/100ths of a full-size.

At the expense of maneuverability, which is more important to me.

It's wider (though not by as much, Euros don't like super wide vehicles) and a bit taller, IIRC, as well.

Hmm... Nope.

I can't picture the Colorado selling really all that well.

But this, is probably close to the payload and utility that small truck customers are looking for

I saw where a local Chevy dealer got a new Colorado that's fully loaded for $35k.  I'm sure it comes with a lot but not sure if people would want to pay that much for it.

What's wrong with a small SUV then? If you're not hauling, what's the utility of an open bed?

You don't want manure, compost, live chickens , household garbage, or even freshly harvested garlic in your passenger compartment, do you?

I was thinking that if I can finally get a house I don't want to get the gas cans filled for the lawn mower using my car.  So yeah using something with an open bed has advantages.
