It's an E60. I'm thinking about going with that idea because it's painfully obvious my dad wants to get himself something new.

In that case, help out dad. A '10 E60 would be the best of that gen, being last year production.

The only thing that I would want to add is only take your friend up on the offer to keep the S5 for a week to test it out if you're seriously set on it.  I feel like that car, with its way higher sex appeal and limits in comparison to the GTI/535, will probably win you over and start playing emotional mind games and if you don't end up with it, you'll just be miserable.

CALL_911

I don't know about miserable, but I do think there's a high chance of it happening at the end of its stay.

Im still not for the S5 to actually keep and own

Def test drive all the cars before making a decision. I'm sure showing up to dealerships in the S5 will help

The only car aside from my dad's car and the S5 I have any interest in is the WRX, and I couldn't find a single example to drive last time I looked (in September)

I found the WRX to be a pretty disappointing drive relative to the '15 GTI. I don't know how you're GTI compares to the latest, but I'd try it for a season w/ snows before I bought a WRX.

Solely based on paper the WRX looks exciting as hell. I'm eager to try one out

Will be interesting to see what you think of the WRX.

It has not reviewed well in UK/Europe: http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/subaru/wrx-sti/verdict

But then, Subaru have sold fewer cars across the whole of Europe YTD than they sell in the US in a single month (to end of Sept, something like 22,00 cars in Europe, as opposed to almost 500,000 in America). Proof, yet again, that different markets have different tastes.

I haven't driven the current generation, but I drove a pre-fender flare version of the previous generation and found it completely underwhelming.  If you put your foot into it, it was pretty quick, but when driven normally on the street it was like driving any old economy car.  Economy car interior, muted exhaust...  It just didn't feel special.  If you want a car that feels like a mainstream compact when driven normally but can haul ass when you give it the spurs, it was a great choice.  That wasn't what I was looking for.

The 2008 model, right?  Yeah, that was a turbo Camry.

No, I drove a 2010.  After they tightened the suspension and increased the power to 265, but before they added the fender flares on the sedans to make them stand out a bit more from the regular Impreza.

2015 WRX is a whole different animal. Def worth looking into if you want performance, all weather capacity and have any concern for reliability/running costs.

The WRX is faster (once you get past all the turbo lag anyway), but otherwise? The GTI is cheaper, nicer inside, handles just as well, has a better clutch / shifter, and generally looks like something an adult would drive.

If you aren't a tuner boi or don't need AWD, it's a no brainer imo.

GTI responds well to tuning too

Me and my dad went over to his friend's to see them at their Thanksgiving lunch for a little bit and I took the S5 out for a spin. So it's grey (bluish grey) on black, not grey on red, and has 18k miles on it- not 10k. It needs a little bit of cosmetic work (there are some scratches and a dent in the drivers door which he's been meaning to get fixed). As I expected, I liked it a lot. Fast as hell, the steering is pretty communicative, the gearbox feels like a precision tool, and the V8 sounds absolutely primeval. Downside, he's undecided if he wants to sell it now, but he's definitely unloading it before August 2015.

It seems like your Dad's friend is waffling regarding selling you his car.  I would bail on this transaction.  Large financial transactions with friends often don't end well.  Who knows what his son is telling him as well.

Rent a storage locker.  As well, many garages/service centres will store them for a small fee.

Yeah ... Miles 80% higher than what was originally stated, needs some repairs, and now he's waffling on selling?

Doesn't sound like such a great deal now.
