I think I may be replacing my car. Here are my options.

1. One of my dad's closest friends' sons is selling his 2010 (not 2011 as I said in the chat thread) S5. This thing has been owned by him since it was new, and has 10k miles on it, as the son lives in the city and apparently hardly used it. It is grey on red, has a 6MT, the 4.2L V8, and it has all the toys. I like the idea of owning an S5, but the more I think about it, the more it scares me. It's a gas guzzler, it will be expensive to fix when something goes wrong, and it's flashier than I would like.

2. A 2015 WRX. It's definitely nowhere as cool as the S5, but it is more practical for very obvious reasons that I don't need to elaborate on.

This would be my only car for I don't even know how long, and being in Syracuse, I would like something with AWD. Please spare me the "you're a spoiled piece of shit" tirades, I get the idea. Between these two choices, what would you pick? BTW, it is still very possible I just keep the GTI. I'm open to it, but I do want to consider these two as well.

I would love an S4, but I can't seem to find a decent one for a reasonable amount of money. My dad's friend is pretty much liquidating this S5.

He told me to take the S5 for a week to see how I like it. I guess I'll see how I feel about it over this extended test drive.

If the S5 doesn't work out you can re-sell it for pretty close to what you paid (or even more, if it's as much of a steal as you describe) and buy your WRX then. A new car is always available -- a used car is a one-time thing.

Assuming you like it, of course.

The 4.2L V8 in the early S5s was a glorious piece.  Unless I was driving like 20K miles a year, I would definitely pay the penalty in fuel economy for that.

One more option I forgot to include:

My dad wants to give me his 2010 535xi with 65k on it. It's....not my first choice, but it's an option.

Nothing, but this will be a DD for as long as I live in an incredibly snowy climate where I will be responsible for getting places on time. I'd prefer to have something with AWD and throw some snows on it come winter. I will say, I most certainly do not need something like an S5, so I won't be disappointed if that doesn't work out. I went into this thinking 2010 or so WRX.

Why are you so bitter? More importantly, why are you so worried about what my parents choose to do with their money? With how much you bring up the point, I'm really starting to wonder.

EPA rates it at 16/22. I mean, the thing is a heavyass AWD coupe with a V8.

Would the GTI with snows not work out well?

First thing, I have no room at either my parents place or the small apartment I will be probably living in to keep them. Secondly, this could be a decent time to ditch it while it still has value and there actually is a point in replacing it. AWD is not absolutely imperative, but this car will be close to a lifeline while I'm up there, so I'd rather have something with it. In addition to getting slammed with snow, its a very hilly area as well.
