Higher trim lower level vehicle vs. basic higher level vehicle?

It's hard to find a real stripper (car) nowadays. In the fall I was looking for a base manual Nissan Micra advertised for $9995. The Micras are selling like crazy up here, but apparently there's no manual base Micras in the entire country. Dealers don't want strippers on their lot.

Most new "stripper" cars are nothing like those of a few decades ago. They all come with power windows, locks, A/C, CD stereo w/aux input, etc. With the addition of heated seats, this is how I bought my Focus and I'm happy with it. If I went for the Titanium model, I'd get TouchMyFord, some fog lights and a bit more trim, but then I'm into Fusion money. So generally for my money, I'd go with the next higher model with a few less features than the loaded lower model.

Here's a great example of something I'm currently researching...

2016 Mazda Miata, loaded with options, 155hp, manual, will probably cost at least $42,000 up here.

2015 BMW 228i xDrive Convertible, already well equipped but no frills, 241 hp, manual, starts at $45,550.

I'm no longer looking at the Miata.

Pricing out a 2015 F-150 XL with zero options: around $27,000. But I bet hard-working honest roll-up-the-sleeves Americans would be hard pressed to find a dealer with stripper work trucks on the lot. No dealers in my area have any - zillions of effete optioned up ones available though.

That's true all over as far as I can tell.

The only time you get true basic pickups is if you're a large contractor ordering them by the dozen.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Exactly right. I'd wager $100 I wouldn't be able to pick out a sub-$40,000 truck at my local Ford dealership.

I also assume that pretty much any new car will have the luxuries I want-- A/C, cruise, power mirrors, power mirrors if more than two go down, acceptable stereo with AUX input (actually, that one requires an upgrade on some cars, IIRC). Might pay extra for a sunroof, depending.

Can't you special order a car or truck?

The one dealer I talked to about doing that, the words "upcharge" and "substantial deposit" entered the conversation, and it pretty much ended there.

Ah, well, I guess it depends then. I would probably rather pay a bit more for a truck than have to buy a leather-clad all-boot-and-no-dirt truck I'd just get dirty. Assuming, of course, I had a legit use for a big new truck...

Actually, I get to spec the works trucks we get at work (feds do indeed buy dozens), and I spec them exactly the way I mentioned-- A/C, cruise, power mirrors, power mirrors if more than two go down, acceptable stereo with AUX input. Also no carpet and no vinyl seats (water from rain jackets just runs down the back of the seat and down your pants). Otherwise minimal everything unless we need to tow with it.

It's been my experience that dealers generally have one on the lot so they can advertise "NEW 2015 XXXXX pickups in stock from $(some low stripper price)".

You get to the lot to check it out and it's a work truck, or in some cases "We just sold it not 20 minutes ago, here look at this loaded model XXX".

Ditch the AWD on the BMW and it's probably the same price.

Why are Canada's prices so out of whack? The Miata will be around 1/2 the price of the 228i.

Supply/demand. Doesn't really explain the discrepancy with the BMW being relatively cheap, so on that I dunno. Mainstream cars are pretty much par with American prices.

You can't ditch the AWD, they all come with AWD.

The Vert is only available in AWD but the coupe comes in RWD or AWD unless you step up to the 235i.  Very odd that the Vert can't be had in RWD since that is likely to be the car that gets parked in the winter.

M235i Cabriolet is RWD.

Im surprised Miatas are in such high demand up there. Id bet its the opposite- Mazda has to charge that much to make selling Miatas profitable up there. I guess thats a different spin of the same supply/demand concept. How much do Boxsters cost up there???

Boxsters start at $58,600 up here, which isn't really much more than the US price. The Miata really is an anomaly I don't understand.

Yeah, the point was there is no 228i rwDrive cabriolet available. You can't buy a less expensive RWD 228i cabriolet, BMW doesn't sell them.

For what it's worth the 2015 MX-5 GT 6-speed manual with bells and whistles is about $40,000 MSRP, but Mazda is dropping $5000 incentives on their hoods to get them out the door. Real-world price for a fully-loaded GT is about $35,000 (and they're all PRHT in Canada; the only way to buy a soft-top MX-5 is to get the base GX with a 5-speed, so there's one reason why the Miata is more in Canada).

Base price on a BMW Z4 is $54,300 for the 240 hp engine. A Mustang V6 convertible starts at $30,349, EcoBoost starts at $39,399 and GT (V8) starts at $48,399.

Yeah I know.  I meant for the "unless you step up to the 235i" to refer to the vert.

Try to find a dealer who does a lot of commercial and fleet sales.  I've noticed you typically have to leave the city and get out into the sticks to find a dealer catering to farmers and tradesmen.  When you get there, you'll find all of the plain white, steel-wheeled stripper trucks hidden round the back where retail customers are unlikely to see them.
