LOL, no, this is the very definition of a sports car.

Yes, of course it's a sports car.  Sports car are not now and never have been defined by power output.  As you point out, it's practically the quintessential sports car.  This is what it's all about.

Of course its a sports car in the vein of MGs and other slow sports cars of the past, you just can't throttle steer. Without the latter, the fun quotient takes a steep dive.

Because that's the only option.

Put a Hayabusa engine in the kei car, that's a start.

40% of the power with 80% of the weight, but the Miata is junk.

I do agree it's silly.

I don't mind that either of them are low on power. Hell I probably wouldn't fit in this thing anyways.

It is, I agree.

I also like the Miata. Both cars would be better with more power of course, but of the two I would take the Miata over the S660.

Knew this would come up. I'm on the fence with the Miata. Power is adequate, but remember this thing will cost at least $35,000 up here, at which point all the appeal is gone. The S660 is interesting because it makes me want it sold here for under $20k... it sells for $16,700 US in Japan. There's a threshold where an (underpowered) toy becomes not worth it. For me that's $25-28k.

I think most people are excited by the prospect of an export market S1000 with 120+ HP and a sub-ton weight than the Kei-class compliant version shown.

Yes, although the 660 would still be compelling at $17k, if the 1000 was priced at say $21k.

SVT666

I doubt I would even fit.  I don't fit in a Miata.

Nah, people are excited about the 1-liter export version and ripping on the half-liter version for being underpowered.

Hard to pin down the exact numbers, but the liter version looks to have a better power-to-weight ratio than the Miata, while being mid-engined and cheaper to boot. It's not hard to see the appeal.

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

QuoteWe previously reported that American Honda CEO Tetsuo Iwamura wanted to sell the Japan-only S660 around the world, and that time may have finally arrived. According to Australian publication Motoring.com.au, the Japanese automaker has greenlit a more potent version of the S660, which will wear an S1000 badge and be offered in other markets outside Japan.

Honda S660 Concept Front Three Quarter The tiny sports car will reportedly drop the 64-hp 660-cc three-cylinder engine in favor of a larger 1.0-liter turbocharged inline-three that dishes out around 126 hp to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual. In addition to the more powerful engine, the S1000 will have a hard roof with a wider and more aggressive body than the S660. Another difference between the S1000 and S660 you can expect is a unique "snorkel-type" roof air-intake that will help cool the engine. What's more is that there are even reports of an S660 Type R in the works. This car will reportedly put out over 100 hp as well, and it may show up in showrooms as soon as mid-2016. Rumors of a kei-car in the U.S. have been circulating for quite some time. We've reported before that Honda could wait for the more potent version of the S660 to arrive before exporting to other markets including the United States. While 126 hp doesn't sound like much, it should be plenty for a mini-car that weighs between 1,875 and 2,000 pounds. To meet American front- and side-impact regulations, however, some changes would need to be made.

Honda S660 Japan Spec Rear Three Quarter 03 As designer Sugiura told us when the concept debuted in 2013, "any export version, and we are not saying we have one yet, would have to undergo some major body modifications like the impact-absorbing '5 mph bumpers' required for the U.S. market as well as wider fenders and wheel arches for larger tires." Still, this gives us hope that we may one day get Honda's pint-sized, mid-engine roadster.
This is all guessing right now, but Motor Trend is saying 1.0L turbo engine making 126hp, weighs around 1800lbs, fixed roof with a snorkel, it'll be wider fenders and wheel arches, and there might even be a Type R version in the works.

Never happen. Besides, wider bodywork and bigger tires will ruin the appeal, and price wise it'll end up in Miata territory. Damn regulations.  :shakesfist:
