It's possible, but much more highly regulated than it was previously. It would take a bit more ingenuity than just misrepresenting earnings.

They run out of money.

Guys, its just not possible for a company to lose money over a sustained period of time and not fess up. Accounting/Financial Reporting is not that complicated.
