I don't like the X. I wish it was just called a Terra.

Well I've spent more hours than I care to admit on a bunch of small-seeming projects for the XTerra, and I'm just about done. Should be good to go for at least ten years.

OEM fog lights
KC Daylighter 130W driving lights, with high beam switch + high beam override
Soundstream touch screen head unit, Bluetooth and all
plywood toolbox, mounts for saw, axe, and fire extinguisher
mounted flashlight
1st aid kit
combination USB and AUX jack for the blank power port space
magnetic window screens
window rain shades
little platform that makes the back area long enough to sleep in
Bridgestone AT/LT tires
chains for all four wheels
front  tow hook

All I have left to do is a tow bumper, which is $400 and will have to wait a little bit.

But really, I have never needed a winch, and they're expensive and require an expensive bumper. No need = not gonna do it.

You gotta cut zipties when you're done.

Ratchet straps and bungees.

A good strap style come-along will work wonders, with a little elbow grease. Norimally, you only have to move the vehicle a couple of feet to get over whatever it is youve gotten hung up on.

You wouldn't need a winch if you had a sweet clutch bypass button and could use the starter to get over stuff. :evildude:

Maybe, I'm not sure it would have helped much the few times I've been stuck. Probably worth keeping in the toolbox though.

I've watched/helped with two stuck trucks. Each time, I would have just left it there to die had it been mine. One was stuck in the sand/high tide at a lake, the other was stuck on an atv trail with flat tires and no easy access.

The best way to get unstuck is to not be a dumbass and get stuck in the first place. The latest Dirt Every Day is an excellent example of that.

Being a dumbass has always been what has gotten me stuck. Oh, I can make that, I'll just gun it. Just today I let the wiser side win and backed back down a road after it was apparent stuckness was near.

Obviously, if you get yourself super dumb ass stuck, it won't help much. It is helpful when that one rock or stump ends up being just a couple inches bigger than it looked.

I got pulled out 3 times.  1979 Subie wagon. 1992-1994.

-was doing donuts in the parking lot of the grocery store when my sister in the backseat yelled so I turned around to look what was wrong and pushed the brakes and slide up onto an icebank (where the plow had pushed like a foot of snow). High-centered with all 4wheels off the ground. Dad came to try and pull the car with a towstrap, no luck. Called a towtruck, all he did was tie a chain around the axle, got a running start and yanked the car.

-second we were going up switchbacks and decided to take a "shortcut" up the mountain, as we didn't make it up (mud) and were carefully backing back down, slid into the snowbank. snow literally at the window level on one side.  We had already passed two stuck and abandoned trucks on the way up.

It's the plateau you see in the back, named "White Mountain"

-third hauling balls on a dirt road through sagebrush, could see a creek up ahead, about 10ft deep. We could see tracks coming up the road on the other side, but at the last minute I slammed on the brakes. Front end fell off a cliff. There was no road on our side, we would have nose-dived straight down. Again all 4 wheels off-ground, 2 guys standing on the rear bumper didn't help at all. Somebody out driving around looking for their dog gave us a pull .

I am so amazed we never died.

I don't think he even has the 4runner anymore
