I miss the days when GM would list every modern feature a car had somewhere on the body. Lumina ABS Multiport EFI P/S Electronic Gauge Cluster... read like a classified ad.

My friend's dad had one in high school.  It was a pretty cool, good looking car back then.

Saw a guy at an Auto-x with one of those in a beige/champagne color.  Full suspension upgrade, supercharger, manual transmission swap, and Corvette brakes.  I think he was putting down between 350 and 400 hp.  The only outward sign that the car wasn't stock were the brakes, but the wheel design (pretty sure they were a factory Impala wheel) hid the brakes enough that you really had to be looking to notice.  Total sleeper.

Haha, pretty sick.

I remember racing with a black Impala SS on the highway once on my way back from school.  This was way back when I had my Passat.  I did a pretty good job of keeping up with him.  We came up to a cop sitting on the side of the road, apparently looking for speeders.  Amazingly, we both were able to scrub off enough speed in time to not get arrested (we were both doing triple digits).  After we got past the cop and it was apparent he wasn't coming after us, I drove back up to the guy to see if he wanted to resume, but he waved me off.  He'd had enough for the day.  Too close a call for him.

Extremely light, RWD, and enough space under the hood for a 302.

Too bad about everything else.

I mean, if you wanna do stupid things with compact '70s Fords, I'd start with a Maverick at least.

<2001 Impala SS>

It was ridiculous how much those cars got shit on as "not 'real' Impalas" at the time because they were front-drive.

Make the Impala RWD, and then we'll talk about the return of the real Impala.

Quote
Dismissing this Chevy Impala SS as a pretender because it isn't rear-drive like the Impalas of yesteryear is a lazy cop-out. It's a cop-out because those old Impalas weren't that great and how this car compares to the crusty ghosts of ancient namesakes is unimportant.

It's a long-held belief; I figured I would have posted something about it, so I searched :lol: Took all of about 30 seconds to find.

They were as fast in a straight line as the '94-'96 Impala SSes, and way better around corners. The '06-?? V8-powered ones were even faster. I remember them getting crapped on at the time and I didn't get it, because the car could lay the boots to any Impala SS that came before it.

giant_mtb

Those s/c 3.8s were bulletproof rockets. Throw and underdrive pulley on and you could smoke just about anything in its realm or beyond and get 28mpg on the highway.
