Why would you want this over an ND? It's slower and uglier.

I feel like the Toyota will be a hell of a lot more mod friendly.

Really?  A Toyota vs. like the most modded and raced car history?  Toyota has had a recent history of abandoning their sports cars in favor of no-nonsense (and no-fun) cars.  Remember the MR-2 Spyder?  It was better to drive than the MX-5.  And it sold like 5 units, so they half assed an ACT in it that made it a second slower to 60 than the manual counterpart and then abandoned it without trying to change it up to make it more competitive.

I am not really a convertible fan so a tiny coupe excites me more. And I think it looks a lot better than the ND.

Last one made in 1987; and there were never that many to begin with.

Don't see how this contradicts Raza about the "recent history."

That car is like 30 years old.  I don't see how it has any bearing on what Toyota is like now.  Supras have tons of mods too, but that went out of production in a different century.

Holy shit, the planned price of this thing is $12,500. If it ever makes it to NA (doubtful, but there's hope) they're saying it'll still be more than $10,000 cheaper than the Miata.

If they tone down the gaping front maw and bring it here, I want one.

Yeah if this thing is $15k-18k in the US I'd take it in a heartbeat.

If it really ends up being fun to drive and actually costs less than 18k, it'll be a smash hit. Even if the base model is spartan, that leaves $7k in options before you hit the base price of a Miata.

Hell, for that money, it's worth it to spray paint a piece of cardboard and shove it in there.

I've never heard anything other than $25k for the BRZ/FRS. In any case, it's extremely unlikely the SFR will ever be sold here.

Cheap fun. And it's not sexy, but it's kind of cute. It has potential to be a legitimately cheap and fun, while providing long-term reliability, and not making the owner look like some sports car douche bag. It might be great for the same reason that the early Miatas are great. They're a lot of fun, you can reach their full potential at safe speeds, and they're endearing.

If they can actually launch if for under 18k (and it's actually good to drive), it'll be a huge hit.

Might be a cheap way to get into track racing or autocross.  Maybe a Spec series.  But yeah, it offers nothing over a used MX-5 other than being new and ugly.

Even if they price it at $15-18 thousand, it will not be a smash hit in the U.S. - It only comes with a manual transmission, it seats 2, and the MX-5 Miata doesn't sell that many here currently as it is.

I hope they sell it here but it they do, you won't see many.

I wish MINI could get their hands on this platform. IIRC BMW and Toyota have a platform sharing agreement.

I'd buy the fuck out of something like that with MINI marketing and details.
