Hybrids across Entire Porsches lineup including 911

Porsche has confirmed plans to broaden its range of hybrid vehicles, including the iconic 911.

A hybrid variant will be developed for in each model line "in the near future," the company wrote in a Twitter post. "Even in the 911."

Company engineering head Erhard Mössle earlier this year confirmed that the oft-rumored hybrid 911 was under development, though he cautioned that "a lot of things need to be solved" before the electrified model can be put on the market. Engineers are said to be dealing with packaging issues, while attempting to offset the battery's weight penalty.

CFO Lutz Meschke suggests production costs for electrified vehicles are at least 10,000 euros (~$11,000 USD) higher than that of an identical vehicle with a combustion engine.

"The higher costs cannot currently be recouped on the market," he said. "But there is no alternative, we have to invest in electric mobility. Next in line is the sports car, the 911, and after this, of course, we will have the fully electric-drive Mission-E."

The company already offers hybrid technology across several models including the Cayenne, Panamera and flagship 918 Spyder. The Macan is also expected to receive a hybrid powertrain. The latest comments suggest the new 718-series Cayman and Boxster will also be electrified at some point.
