so I need someone to either talk me out of this dumb idea, or reassure me that it's not actually a dumb idea...

I like the 5er a lot more than the 3er these days. It is just much more luxurious and comfortable. A 528i shouldn't be unreliable and it's fast enough. I was very close to getting one a couple of years ago.

That ad has no info however on how this specific car is equipped. The variable dampers (EDC) help the ride balance a lot.

It's not a bad idea, although that is a more basic 528i.

Sometimes those 2.0T have issues with oil consumption, but generally they're pretty nice cars.

I'd ask a little on it, I mean, that front passenger side corner clearly is visibly scratched. Needs painted.

It's a certified car, doesn't have many miles on it and looks well equipped. Doesn't seem like a bad idea to me. I'd be annoyed by the lack of heated seats, but you're in SoCal.

Yeah, it caught my eye mainly because it's a good $5k cheaper than the GS350's/IS350's I was browsing. There's always been a glut of late-model BMW's roaming around my area, so they can't be that bad, right? I figure most likely scenario, I end up in the exact same scenario 8 years from now as today.

As for the heated seats, I keep forgetting that the ones in the Caddy haven't worked for at least 3 winters now. So no biggie for me indeed.

Even at its worse, it drives well.

It's a luxury sedan. I did drive a 528i almost back to back with an E-class (E200) and an A6 (3.0T). The 528i felt the most nimble and frankly almost as powerful as the Audi. The E class had a heavenly ride but was dog slow.

I enjoyed the 530i I had.  With EDC it rode well even with these rubberband tires

Night be worth holding out a little longer if you want a Bimmer. Their record sales year will flood the market with even more off lease cars, driving prices down further.

I prefer the looks and engine of the GS

eh, I'm really not set on a BMW right now; they're just temptingly cheaper than Lexus and Mercedes at this age, and I haven't quite warmed up to the looks of the GS that much yet. I would much rather have the Toyota 3.5 V6 though.

What engine is in that body style 530i? Do/did they sell those in the US? This is getting hard to keep track of.

It's only 528i and 535i and 550i (for the price you're looking at)

The F10 beats the brakes off of the Japanese competition, IMO. There's something about a 5-series that is just so nice.

Vinsanity

Ha well I'm certainly not rolling the dice on a sub-$30k 550i. How are the N55's holding up so far? 535's are priced damn close to similarly-used 335's.

Heated seats were standard on my Jetta in 2008. Fucking nickel and dime shit, BMW.

And yet, the 5 of that generation almost always lost out to the Audi in comparison tests.

In US magazines, yes. For some reason it never did in euro rags.

The 530i was a UAE/Middle East model only.  It had the 260hp N52 3.0L I6 with 8spd auto.  Buttery smooth, but I will tell you it hasn't been very reliable.  In the last year though it's been in the shop 6-7 times for electrical issues.  Mostly fuel system related.  It's left my friend stranded on the side of the road on more than one occasion.

Well that's a shame. Those naturally aspirated straight-6's defined the BMW "character" for a long time.

We got that 530i here too. I've driven it as well as the 528i. Frankly, I much prefered the 4 pot. It is noticeably faster and more agile.
