Well, this thread ended poorly.

Car caught fire today. Totaled. I don't know why, fire started on left side of engine above the exhaust manifold.

You know. I can't really claim that right now. Clearly they die.

They are still super awesome.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Yeah, if I were you, I'd just get another.  It's tough to find ones in good condition without a lot of rust for under $10k.

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

Rupert

At least a four door Wrangler probably wouldn't burn to the ground immediately, they're new enough.

You underestimate what a FiatChrysler vehicle is capable of.

I was actually talking to an owner of one tonight, and his opinion was that he wished his would burn.

Goddamit, Soup, I didn't post anything about that Toyota originally, but it just had too goddamn many miles on it. Here's also a something else, fucking jap vehicles ain't as great as their reputation, and 200K plus is too many miles for any vehicle.
They have service departments for a reason.
OK, I'll shutup now.

I've bought Fords with more mileage if it comes down to that.

This was a very well maintained and lightly used car, that it was a Toyota with a great reputation for longevity was only a minor consideration.

Not sure I'd consider 16k miles per year "lightly used", though from photos it did appear like it was well maintained and cared for.

Well, mileage was high, but everything indicated they were nothing more than commuter miles. No heavy towing, no off-roading, and very well maintained. That's what I meant.

I mean look, I know buying a high mileage vehicle is a bit of a roll of the dice, and it would be foolish not to expect certain things to wear out or break, but I check it out as much as possible and do some research, and I usually make out alright on these things.

lol yeah, these guys are almost acting like an older car is a death sentence.

Some repairs are expected. Fires are not.

This was clearly not even on the radar.  I've owned mostly older cars all my life. I have a pretty good idea what to expect to the most part. I even saw the starter relay issue as a known problem before I bought it but didn't worry about it (even when the relay fails, fires like this are like 1:1000).

And I'm going to go right out and buy another older car: maybe even older.

Yeah, I mean I guess it's nice to know that it's a known issue, but clearly it's not a common problem or these cars wouldn't be so well-liked.
