Cruiser guys suspect this was a starter failure (I forgot the starter is in between the cylinder banks and under the manifold). Apparently the starter contacts weld together and leave the starter engaged while the engine is running and eventually overheat the cable.
A known problem then?  Anything from Toyota on it?

No recalls, and most who seem to have had this problem had put on dual batteries without an isolator switch, but apparently it can happen stock.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Well, it was still clean two days ago when I had the hood open last, and I'd been driving it for a month.

Fair enough. I don't actually open my hood very often.

Interesting. Are there any potential warning signs if you know what to look for, or do people just replace the starter before a certain mileage?

Well, this thread ended poorly.

Car caught fire today. Totaled. I don't know why, fire started on left side of engine above the exhaust manifold.

Oh, shit.

It's not a regular maintenance item, but some of the guys say 50,000 miles.

I've always heard it's best never to open the hood if you think there's a fire. Because, yeah, that gives it a bunch of air and it'll flare up.

I thought it was just steam and there was a leaky rad hose or something.

That gen LC is gorgeous.  I wouldn't blame you at all for trying to get another one.  I'm sure it feels like a much nicer vehicle than an equivalent Tahoe

What I'm having trouble with is: would I feel the same way after having it for say two years instead of a month?

Well what did you like about it?  Why did you want one in the first place.
