87/89/91. Mazda recommends 91.

Shell isn't 87/89/93? That's what I see in most parts of the country nowadays. (High altitudes are 85/87/91)

Most of our local premium is 91.  Only a couple spots have 93.

For being the worst state in existence we seems to have 93 readily available.  At least in the western portion

I don't think I ever saw anything other than 87/89/93 in the Southeast, at least from a major gas brand. I never noticed a difference until I moved to CO, so I just assumed it was related to altitude.

This can have an effect, which can be increased by a leaner AF mixture that I'm sure most new cars, like SkyActive equipped ones are running these days.  Add this to the already super high CR and your best gas being 91 I can understand being nervous about doing any sort of tuning on your car.

For power mods, it sounds like most of the gains people are seeing are from long headers and a tune. Yeah, I wouldn't be so hot on the idea of just flashing a new tune. Quiet a few issues people are having on the Miata forums. Luckily you've got the updated transmission, so you don't have to power about that.

Honestly, if you're looking for more power, I would just wait on the Edelbrock supercharger. A low boost, high efficiency super charger will probably give the best results with the least head ache. Higher up front cost, but worth it IMO.

Lean AF? Lean As Fuck? Is that how you kids describe yourselves after you get "crunked" on "sizzurup"?

Cale is hip but not that hip.

AF = air fuel ratio.

Intake/header/exhaust and tune gives you like 185 whp supposedly. I haven't looked into seeing how far they've pushed that number and that was a while ago, but there are some mad gains to be made with that motor I think. If the ND header is anything like the NC's, it's probably choking the motor half to death.

I may be crazy but I think Laconian was making a joke about the AF reference.

That was like one car with tons of time tuning it on a dyno over and over.  It doesn't seem like people are able to consistently get that number.

I think the NC motor actually had quite a bit more room for improvements than this SkyActive design.

My bar for credibility is Flyin' Miata. If they claim they can do something, it can be done reliably. Right now their m0d page for the ND is this:

Yeah, Kevin from FM is posting on the miata forum.  Sounds like they're working with Edelbrock to offer it on FM.

This is what he said the other day in the Edelbrock thread: "I will point out that we have three NDs for a reason, though. Development is proceeding across several fronts. And that's all you're going to get until I have some significant information to provide."  So they've got a few things they're working on, but, you know, SKYACTIVE.

My motor with an intake/exhaust and tune = 144 whp.

So the latest repeatable result it looks like people are getting with the ND: headers + tune goes from a stock 161 whp to 171 whp.

Yeah. Either the stock engine is way underrated (which might be true), or they picked a funk that shows everything high  either way, 10 whp isn't that big of a deal. Might as well save up for a supercharger

Maybe the 161whp is the bolt -ons without a tune?  Or at least an OTS tune.
