Clearly, it's a total body refresh rather than a new design. Powertrain is a refreshed version of the engine from last year. 6MT or 6AT.

Also, we're not getting the hatchback anymore. Canada only.

It's not bad looking, but it looks kind of old already.

Looks awful and ancient. I just saw a current gen Rio SX hatch... so much nicer. This thing is going straight to the rental lots

Complaining about cars looking old is what got us the hideous designs of today. Same with crappy infortainment.

Ancient probably wasn't the right word. Small cars used to look good. This looks about 10 years old, mostly because I think it is. The proportions are awful as well, the acreage of sheetmetal above the rear wheel screams "third world"

Because only third worlds need small sedans with roomy interiors and trunks?

Both Autoblog and Car and Driver say the hatchback is coming, just a few months later.

It's definitely a basic appearance, though, and the Accent is too small for clean styling to read as classy rather than just dull. Basically Enterprise bait.

I'd say it looks more like a Versa wearing an Accent mask

The Internet is the only place where people really complain. Most of y'all live in the past.

There's plenty of good looking small modern cars; this just looks kind of old

I am ready for the Accent Note!

Not according to the EPA.

https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/byclass/Subcompact_Cars2000.shtml

2-door vs 4-door.  The Integra, Impreza, and Civic COUPES were classed as subcompacts by the EPA.  The sedan variants were compacts.

EDIT:. Appears the Civic came in 1 cu.ft. under the limit for a compact, mostly because of its small trunk.  Passenger volume was comparable to a compact.

.....

The Integra was a hardtop sedan in it's native Japan, and MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE

The Civic was also a compact and MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE

The Impreza was a compact an MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE

Let's look at the actual subcompact sedan segment

Why does price dictate aesthetic proportions?

Eh more so length, but proportions change all the time when budgets aren't big enough to translate a hatch to sedan without spending too much money in development/manufacturing.

I think the 121, Accent, and Tercel even shared rear doors with their hatchback counterparts, (I THINK).

Actually pretty attractive, IMO.

It looks OK. Not very usable proportions, tho.

12,000 RPM

My sister had one.... it was roomy enough for a car of its size.

If that Tercel was on sale today as a new car I'd buy it

Those things aren't very comfortable

Modern cars, even at their worst are so refined and comfortable, with a care and thought that went into design, comfort, that just wasn't really considered back then.

I have a friend that has one now, the Echo is a way more thoughtful design.

2o6

Also I don't think the current Accent has bad proportions, it looks fine in person

It just looks old. I expected them to put a little more verve in the design; the European i20 looks really good. This looks kind of old and basic.
