I get about 300 miles on a tank of gas in mixed driving in my Tacoma (18mpg). 350 of pure highway if I'm lucky and/or unladen with extra persons/stuff.  That's legitimate range.  I could get about a week out of it.

I'm not sure how this is relevant.

Oh. I thought you were saying it's no big deal that the Model 3 has that kind of range.

Yeah, my cars get about 240-250 miles per tank. 300+ real world mileage is impressive.

Cool, but the F30 is a pos  and the 3 is too. At least the F30 can do repeated 0-60 runs, drive cross country and doesn't have an interior that looks like recycled fisher price plastics.
Cool, but it doesn't have a 310 mile range.

Do you do some sort of 0-60-0-60-0-60mph Olympic event or something?

Yeah?  I know?  lol

Did you not see the part where I said "that's legitimate range.  I could get about a week out of it"...?  That was essentially a "compliment."  Sorry I compared it to what I drive.  10/10 won't do again.

IDK, 2o6 is on that haterade in this thread. Chris was saying how 300+ miles per tank is impressive. I'll admit I also misread his first post, but the two are essentially agreeing with each other.

But it's not impressive when compared to a conventional car, nor is that range confirmed as "possible"
One thing is no one is talking about is the actual range on the highway at highway speeds. At 70mph cruise, that EPA rated range will likely be less than the 220mi it's rated for - so try under 200. The "long range version" is likely to be under 300mi

No compention in what regard? Since when is "futurism" a noted expert in automotive Journalism? Most of these reviews are from pretentious hipster type tech blogs - guys with beards because they are 'ironic,' square rim glasses, don't know their ass from their face, and don't know the first thing about Automobiles - but yes, on the narrow completely subjective metrics that they evaluate this and other cars on - this car wins?

Yeah, and everybody thought cars were dumb because they couldn't drive out of a given range without needing to go back to home base for fuel. Then gas stations happened. And everybody thought automobiles would never be able to move heavy loads like mules or horses can...then trucks and more powerful automobiles happened. I understand your point, but you can't disregard progression, even if it still isn't "good enough."

But there no progression. No one is saying electric vehicles aren't viable - but I seem to be the only person judging the car this car on it's merits, and not what it represents.

But I am judging it on it's merits. It's more costly, doesn't perform better, has less features, and subjectively less quality than it's competitors. What does it offer besides being a niche product that allows you to show off to your neighbor on how dumb of a consumer you are?

The market is betting on Tesla. Sure it's being shorted  - massive negative P/E ... https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/TSLA/key-statistics?p=TSLA

But you are making the mistake of comparing Teslas to IC cars. Tesla's merit is that it has the early jump on a new market - one that will largely be enforced for it by government regulation. Sure a Chevy will travel further on a tank of gas and be cheaper and more reliable (well, maybe not reliable)  but that's only  looking at its attributes as a transportation device. Not as a technology that will become largely illegal in the next 40 years.

And Teslas are cool; they have a huge following out of all proportion to their market share - that is a MASSIVE advantage. You mustn't focus on the rational here. Ten years ago it was far more rational to buy a flip phone over the iPhone. But the iPhone was a cool icon, an object of desire. That led it to crush the opposition. So squabbling over the Model 3's range and lack of dashboard is irrelevant. It's its qualities as a cool object of desire that will lead it to dominance. Once people start seeing them on the roads, they will sell themselves.

People who care nothing about cars follow and recognize Teslas. My wife, who cares nothing about mobile phones, had an Android phone - worked great. All her friends had iPhones. She came one night & said she wanted an iPhone. Got online the next day and ordered a big expensive pink iPhone.

Tesla is a game changer. Like it or not.

What do you mean there's no progression?  Electric cars have been shit for range until recently.  Back when the Nissan Leaf EV came out it could go, what, 120 miles on a charge?  How is 300 miles not progress?

Are you misreading what I'm saying on purpose? I have a bone to pick with the ill-thought out interior, and the dubiousness of Tesla's build quality and ability to scale up quickly and produce a competent product on the level of GM et al.

But the car itself, the range and performance numbers is nothing to sneeze at (at least on paper).
