Ooooo, Outback XT, do want. That generation of Outback is the best looking of the lot IMO.

I think this next weekend I'll go back home and see if I can maybe fix anything. I'll get some better pics then.

If I could drill out spot welds and just bolt shit together again I'd be open to that.

I'm sorry man.

The total cost of parts you've spent in fixing up your Outback has been around $1000 I'm guessing (not counting the roof box).  So although it was a lot of labor (labor of love), the total cost of parts hasn't been huge.  It's not worth it limiting yourself to certain model and year cars for that.  It's not like you have $5000 in parts you've recently purchased.  Maybe I'm wrong.

I also wouldn't try to fix this car.  You've been doing everything yourself and just buying parts.  This is auto body stuff.  You're going to end up spending a lot more money than you have already spent in parts for an old car.

Get whatever strikes your fancy and thank whomever you don't have broken stuff on your body or the person(s) you accidentally hit.

Cookie Monster

Roof box I had a long time before I got the car.

I've spent easily $4k in parts, all of which can come off and onto another Outback easily, hence why I'm looking for another one.

If I get something different, all those parts will be worth maybe $1.5-2k max.

I was thinking about fixing it, but I really don't know if I could pull it off and I don't want to throw more money at it if I don't know it will work right in the end. Plus, the A/C is dead for sure, which means I'd need a new condensor and recharge that as well.

I'm tempted to grab some fuel efficient commuter car off CL right now for around $2k, then wait for a while till the right '96 Outback pops up and jump on that later.

WTF are you talking about.  You said you wanted another Subaru Outback of similar vintage because you have $4000 dollars worth of parts you've recently bought that you can swap into it.  Then you said that until you find one, you'll find a $2000 beater car to take to work everyday.

So I said that sounds like a good idea.  Then I asked will you be able to prevent yourself from beautifying your $2000 beater car until you get the Subie Outback that you really want for which you can take your $4000 worth of parts you have recently bought to put into.

If you think my train of thought is rather stupid, fine.  I understand you're kind of pissed right now, but don't take it out on me.

You know it is a great idea in fact to buy your $2000 beater, buy a bunch of beautifying parts for it, only to dump it when the car you really want, the same vintage Subie Outback you just lost, shows up for you to put the $4000 worth of parts you already have into.

I'm being serious here.  It's a great hobby you have and I'm glad you share your experiences with me on this board.  But don't shit on me just because you're pissed at what life has just thrown you.

My bad, I thought you were saying I shouldn't have spent $4k on my $2k Outback in the first place, which I took it to mean you were shitting on me.

Yes, if a 3rd beater comes into the equation, that would remain stock so I can save the money and buy a better Outback.

I'm looking at one now but it's kind of rough. Miles are low but it needs a bunch of work.

Riding motrocycles on-post at Army bases is usually the safest. Wide, well-marked streets and intersections, with the top speed being 40mph here and roads that would be 45mph in a town are only 35mph...

Real talk though - the engine got pushed hard enough that the alternator belt fell off.

Considering a hitch had its way with the front of my car, is it worth fixing? I don't want to get the radiator and support, only to find out the engine is borked.
