Probably got a knot stuck in the valves

I already disassembled the top end and checked. No evidence of knots.

How about the valve (sleeves?)?

I'm thinking of the holes that the valve stems have to slide up and down in.  If the valves were sticking open were the stems not stuck in the sleeves?

Oh, the valve guides. They look fine.
The intake was sticking open because it had zero lash. The exhaust valve was burned. It's amazing it ran at all for the 400 kilometers that I put on it.

You put 400 kilometers on that in like a week?

So you just have to disconnect the connecting rod from the crank and that pops out as a unit?

Slide the cylinder off, and the piston stays attached to the rod and crank. Then the wrist pin slides out and the piston comes off.

The combustion chamber stays the same size?  Won't that increase compression?

Not exactly. The old piston is a flat top, while the new piston is dished.

Should be able to hit 40 knots on flat ground.

Yes, I see.  Pretty hard to tell on the old piston that it's flat.

Actually, the cylinder head has a kind of domed shape, too

A double dome.  That's kinda like an ellipse.
