Toyota outsells GM for first time – but can it keep the crown once chip shortage ends?

In a historic turn, Toyota Motor North America has taken the U.S. sales crown from General Motors for 2021 after the shortage of semiconductor chips severely hampered GM's ability to build enough vehicles to meet demand.

Tuesday, GM and Toyota reported fourth-quarter and full-year new car sales results, and, as many analysts predicted, Toyota outsold GM in both categories. GM has been the market leader since the Great Depression, according to Automotive News.

2021 fourth quarter:
GM sold 26 EVs.
Tesla sold 308,600.

I think Ford gets it. GM not so much.

GM's EVs have been on stop sale because LG screwed up the batteries.
Hyundai/Kia, GM, Ford, and others use LG for batteries. Hyundai/Kia and GM have had major recalls. Ford better watch out...

The $110k, 9,000 lb Hummer EV is exactly what the market is screaming for.

Nah, I think They will pass on the Hummer EV - the diesel experience is a principal facet of brodozer culture; the racket, the stench, the smoke, the perpetual idling; dat external validation.

Haha, big rig wannabees! It's cringe! They love idling when not even in it. Can't tell you how many times I go to the PO or the mini mart, and there's a brodozer, idling, with no one in it.

Big rigs idle A LOT. Thing is they're doing it out of need - keep the cab warm for a snooze, power stuff in the trailer, who knows what.

We fitted our rigs with Webasto diesel heaters to keep cabs warm and put auto-shut offs if they idled more than like 15 minutes.  Pissed a bunch of the driver's off at first.  You'd swear that toggling the "Start" switch was the hardest thing to do.

There used to be a couple of good reasons for idling a diesel----that ended around 2000 with better tech and software.

We used tach-o-graphs to monitor our trucks (drivers). Drivers hated it.

Don't they have small generators for that?  Idling a 13+ litre engine for cab heat doesn't seem that efficient.

What happens if they needed lights, keep the fridge cool, TV, etc while parked?  Batteries?

All of those are definitely within the budget of two or three deep cycle lead acid batteries.

Actually, a diesel does not have a throttle (i.e., throttle plate), which means there is no vacuum against which the cylinders pull, which means idling a diesel is amazingly efficient, even the big rigs' monster engines.

Not an expert at all on the current state, but peruse the areas whereby big rigs congregate, and you'll still see a LOT of idling big rigs.

Yes, many new ones do. They will also have heaters that heat the engine coolant and keep the cab heat on- on many of them.
Some older trucks will not.

Some will also lose air pressure in the brake system and need to run the engine a while in order to bring that system up to pressure.

Diesels will actually idle usint surprisingly little fuel; but there are still more efficient options.

For a normal work cycle, you're looking at a max of 10-12 hours down. That's like 10% of the capacity of the batteries.

Not that anyone pays attention to laws, but there are a lot of states that law laws against diesel idling for more than like 15 minutes in an hour

There are laws about leaving unattended vehicles running in most places, but most cars come with remote starts from the factory...

Speaking of idling, soccer moms in their Escalades, Range Rovers, BMW X7s, etc etc almost never turn off their car while waiting to drop off their kids to school in the drop off/pick up line.  They'll be sitting there in their car idling for 15 minutes until the bell rings and the line starts moving.  Even if it's not that cold out.  Maybe some of it has to do with wanting to keep their cell phone charged?

About half an hour or so, yes; but the law here doesn't specify a time frame. It simply says "unattended."
