Wow, Hyundai is serious. I actually want to test drive an 07 SE Accent hatchback now.

QuoteHideous IMO.
So you think the more expensive Yaris and XA look better?

Raza

Absolutely bland and boring.  But, not bad.

However, I'm beginning to feel bad for Ford.  That hatch design is going to be a cliche by the time they bring the Focus here.

Did you mean Fiesta?

And the SE model with the sportier suspension should be less than $13k, and comes with side and head curtain airbags standard. That is pretty good imo, though any vehicle in the entry level class tends to be a bit bland by design- since nobody wants to alienate buyers based on styling (a-la Echo).

My only question is weight. The 110hp engine only sounds good if the car weighs in similarly to the new Yaris hatchback.

And compared to the bloated cutesy Yaris hatch, I'll take the Accent in a heart beat based on styling.

I'd say it's on par with the competition.  I'd take it over a rebadged Daewoo, that's for sure.

And when was Ford planning to bring the Euro-Focus over? I thought it was too expensive for the U.S. as their entry level vehicle, and that is why they are bring the next Mazda2/Fiesta over. Since the Fiesta three door reminds me of this new Accent three door, and since the Fiesta will be Ford's competition for the Accent, I figured that was what you were talking about. But hey, do people really get that concerned with styling on entry level vehicles. (remembers all the base Cavalier coupes that Chevy sold) um, never mind that last part.

Raza

The Focus ST starts and 17,000 GBP, which is still much less money than something like GTI.  And, I guess technically, I built an 18K (USD) Focus on Ford's US site.  If they bring the Focus and Fiesta here, I don't see a problem with the Focus being more expensive than the outgoing model.  It makes more sense than VW's upmarket shift which is priming the market for a new entry level model that doesn't seem like it will ever come.

But is that the plan- to bring the Euro Focus to the U.S. soon?

Chevy brought the Aveo over so they had an entry level vehicle, so they could make the CObalt a bit nicer (suposedly). I expect the Fiesta will allow Ford to do the same type of marketing- but only if people think their entry level offering is decent enough. I notice Chevy dealer are advertising stripped Cobalts for $12k, so Chevy may have a problem with pushing Aveos on people.

I actually don't know what the plan is.  I'll do some digging in a bit.

But on that note, I was talking a Chevy salesman a bit ago, and he was saying that with the Cobalt at such a low price he is having trouble pushing the Aveos.

I kind of want to ask him if he'd let me drive a stick Aveo even though I'm not looking into buying one.  Hell, he tossed me the keys to the Legacy when I just asked for him to take me for a ride.

There is a certain point that buyers will think a vehicle is too small. In the U.S., people seem to need a certain amount of vehicle around them to 'feel comfortable'. And it may also be a bit of the 50's ideals left over- where you base the value of a purchase on the pounds per dollar of the vehicle. Seriously.

I actually like the Aveo as an urban run-a-bout. But the manual tranny is very poorly geared, so you might drive an automatic version. I notice you can get used Aveos for under $7k now. That is cheap.

I think the Yaris is better looking but still not a looker by any means. The accent hatchback looks bland and unporputional.

I guess I like clean und understated over bulbous like the Yaris. Styling is subjective of course.

But when you look at the standard specs of the Accent hatch SE:

Four wheel disc brakes with ABS (can you even get that on the Yaris? Fit? Honda doesn't even put four wheel disc brakes on the 06 Civic LX)
a/c
172 watt CD stereo (with available Ipod connectivity)
leather wrapped tilt steering wheel.
16" alloy wheels
keyless entry with alarm
power windows and door locks (kind of goes with the keyless thing-doh)
fog lights
rear windshield wiper
driver armrest
supposedly sport tuned suspension and steering
etc, etc

That is a very well equipped low priced car that /could/ be quite fun to drive- if it is light enough. And it has plenty of standard safety features.

Not bad, but the Euro Focus is better.

so cal cookie

I was VERY impressed with the Yaris when I sat in it at LAIAS, and the Accent sedan seemed about as good, so they seem well matched to me.
Driving them will determine the winner.

Naturally, but it is also a far more expensive car.

Raza

I love the Euro Focus.  But it is much more expensive.

Can you believe that it's got the same chassis as the Mazda3 AND S40?  If they made an AWD Focus with a good amount of power, I might have to buy it.
