Morris Minor

It's been 44 long years since the last Scout left the assembly line, but now, the brand has made its comeback. Revived under the VW Group umbrella, Scout is entering the 21st century with two all-new battery-electric vehicles: the Traveler SUV and the Terra pickup truck. Both will also come with the option of a range-extender. While these aren't the final versions that will go on sale in 2027, they are production-intent concepts.

(And most interestingly... VW has decided to follow Tesla's lead by selling direct to customers, bypassing the US's rapine and zero-value-add dealership racketeers. Expect lawsuits.)

It's interesting... There has always been a rather substantial market in the Wrangler/Bronco/4Runner/Land Rover type world.

I don't think any of them are rather strong competitors.

Agreed - I think people like the chunky & rugged smaller vehicles. Wranglers are too agricultural but the Bronco fits in there nicely.

I mean, it's basically just a Rivian, right?

Morris Minor

I imagine it's going to have Rivian software goodness but VW's expertise at driving down cost of goods sold.. It's what the big guys have a century of expertise in doing, & the lack of which kills Rivian, Lucid & other newcomers.

No the Rivians are unibody, independent suspension.

The Scouts are body on frame, with a solid rear axel. Mechanical lockers front and rear.

My dad bought a Scout II from his brother, it was old and heavy and clunky but 4wheel drive got us to the small ski slope.

He said the Travellall (Suburban competitor) was much more popular than the Scout was- but back then the only SUVs were Suburban, then Broncos and (littler) Jeeps. He remembers Land Cruiser and Land Rover coming out later.

These will be built in South Carolina- kinda pricey for the Maverick crowd (according to the forum LOL) but cheaper than many electrics, and "manly SUV/ Truck" may sell well?

They look like they are going to be full sized pickups and SUV's. I figured they would have come in smaller since they seems to be where the most demand is for SUV's these days.

Easier to build big rather than cram stuff into smaller space?

So I saw some "revised" or "clarified" size specs and I was wrong (about the SUV at least). Their SUV will be smaller than Rivian's current SUV, and only about ~5 inches longer than Rivians second, smaller SUV. It seems to be comfortably in the mid-size SUV realm, which makes sense.

The one thing that makes it seem longer/larger was that the initial specs included the length with the spare tire on the back of the SUV. Most SUV's of course do not carry a spare wheel so it wasn't really an apples to apples comparison.

The SUV especially looks good to me. So much can change between now and 2027 though when they are "expected" to be available. I expect the upcoming VW ID.Buzz to have dismal sales. I wouldn't be surprised if VW decides not to sell the EV pickup.

3rd quarter sales in the U.S. indicate Cybertruck sold more than twice the number of Ford Lightnings and Ford will halt production of the Lightning from mid November to early January. Rivian pickup and GM EV pickups also have dismal sales.

VW is saying price will start right below 60 grand for both these EVs. Based on recent history of other auto companies what they say will be the price and what the actual price ends up being for upcoming EVs are often very different.

Other than Jeeps and Land Rovers I almost never see SUV's with a spare tire at the back. I haven't done a sales analysis, just going by what i see driving every day.

Bronco.  There aren't many real SUVs any more.

At the back, sure, only a few do it that way. But pretty much every truck/SUV has a spare.

SJ_GTI

I thought from the context of the post it was clear I was referring to an external spare but if not, I was referring to an external spare.

My mistake.

AutobahnSHO

Technically you mean, "an external spare on the rear of the vehicle, carried vertical, instead of carried horizontal under the vehicle"
