Toyota Fears Bigger Sequoia is, Well, Too Big

They came late to a game that had was predicated mostly upon a fad.  Perhaps they should have seen the  trend with the Sequoia throughout the large SUV hay days. Decreasing year-after-year sales in such an environment could only spell disaster when the market was pressured for whatever reason. IMO, it's still the best quality large SUV out there.

The large SUV market is a dismal picture at present, even with the redesigns. Unlike with Detroit, It's not that damaging to Toyota who didn't sell many to begin with.  The market has shifted to the much larger mid-sizer market, where Detroit is doing even worse. The Pilot outsells the Tahoe now. Who would have thought that a few years ago?

IMO, Toyota's Sequoia development should have been thrown into the small/mid-size market. Using the fantastic job they did with the Rav4 (upscaling with minimal price increase) as a template, repeat for the 4Runner and Highlander (or its replacement). Oh well. It's always 20-20 as it is often said.

I'd take a Land Cruiser over a Sequoia any day. I DARE any CarSpinner to disagree;)

The Land Cruiser is more expensive and of better quality.  So yeah, I'd like one too but I can't afford one.

The LC is smaller, has better ride quality and has a more refined interior.  The drivetrains are similar.

look at these figures!

sept. 2006 toyota sales figure percents vs. 2005

toyota rav4 + 101.1%

toyota sequoia + 43.2%

toyota highlander + 20.8%

And costs nearly twice as much.

The GM small block is an absolutely fantastic truck engine, that is something that you just can't argue against.

And, Catman, you're right. The 4.7l really did have sufficent power for most people, but some want more even if they don't need it, and 6500 lbs is a pretty weak towing capacity for a vehicle that big.

Not really, the LC starts at around 50, and the Sequoia starts at around 40. A fully loaded Sequoia would cost only a couple thousand less than the LC.

I don't think this quite captures it. Year to date, 2006 vs. 2005, the Sequoia is down about 30%.

Not really, the LC starts at around $55k, and the Sequoia starts around $30k.

I fear a larger Sequoia as well.  Only a matter of time until I'm run over by one at the helm of a cell phone toting housewife.

You're my age.  We're getting old.  Plus, now that you're married, your life expectancy has gone way down, since you're more likely to be poisoned by your wife.

They'll take whatever they can get their hands on.  It used to be RX300s. Then Durangoes.  Then RX330s.  Then Navigators.

The Sequoia is my favorite of the large SUVs.

Still, I don't see the need to make it bigger.  I think these tank-sized vehicles are going to go out of style, so it appears that they moved in the wrong direction on the new model.
