On looks the E90 four door is definitely better than any E46.  Don't contradict me you fiends.

Bull. It looks like a shark snubbed it by biting off the rear end. It doesn't flow well at all.

For most cars my tastes tend toward the newer model.  I'm not sure why, but when viewing an E90 beside an E46, the latter looks dated and somewhat tired.  Not bad by any means, just "less" in some way than the newer car.  Occasionally there is a car whose look lasts beyond the newer models, but it's very rare for me, usually classic cars, and top end sports cars like Ferraris.  A 288 GTO, for example, appeals to me more than most newer Ferraris.
There are 2 BMWs that fall into this category for me: the E38 740i Sport, and the E39 M5.  To me those two are classics.  I'm not sure why I like them so much but I think it may have something to do with me starting to fall in love with cars back in the early 00's when I was about to start driving.  Kind of like the imprinting of a mother on her newborn child, these 2 cars were etched in my mind as the picture of what a car should be.

Anyway, not to get all misty-eyed on you guys, but, [sniff], I just can't help it sometimes.

Always thought the E46 M3 was too boy racer, for an otherwise classy basis. It's akin to a Civic with a tacky bodykit, ugly neon color, and some BBS rims. To me, the E90 is more befitting what a racy version of a luxury car should look like.

The E46 is one of the best BMWs ever made. It's just an excellent all-arounder even if it isn't the quickest.

I'm toying with the idea of picking up a Z4 M Coupe in a few years. That would be epic.

I think it looks good, but I like the M3 before and after the E46.
