Older German cars are great!

My friend for some reason has a 190E and an E34 525i in his family. I've ridden in both and I like them more than any other car I've driven in recent memory, including an S2000 and my old car...they feel as solid as anything modern and they have that character about them. No joke, if not for the repairs and stigma of driving an old luxury car I would probably get something like a 535i for my next car...

TheIntrepid

How's the Accord driving? I can't imagine the ride is too great with it lowered like that.

there is no accord.

and yes. i've been in a W140 S-class and that thing felt like a tank. you hear that solid thud when you close the doors. probably the last of the tank like benzes.

The new one is built considerably better.

I have a friend who owns an E30 BMW 318 convertible. This is a dream of a car. The interior still looks brand new, although it has 160.000km driven... I haven't driven it, but it feels great to sit shotgun.

And my Polo? Well.... 0-62 in 12 seconds... Not really a sports-car, but the roadholding is great. Bought it in 2000 for 1350 bucks and recently got 970 bucks from the insurance, because it was "totalled" (had to have the rear bumper fixed). Never made any problems. A great car.

There are several old german cars I'd like to own, but I can't afford the gas/insurance/taxes. BMW 535i is on top, the E30 325i is on second, then comes the Porsche 924/44, VW Passat I35, a Corrado, any cool old VW like a 75hp Derby maybe...

But right now I'm happy the 55hp lame Polo is such a reliable car the brings me, 4 friends and more beer than any doctor would recommend anywhere I want to. And with a little bit of acceleration time it does 175km/h on the Autobahn. And unlike most cars, my car has a soul. I'm not kidding. Driving a Polo is a very spiritual thing...  :partyon:

I always thought the early 90s BMW 530 with the 3.0L V8 would be a pretty neat ride.  I love the sound of small displacement V8s.

While I admit I only drove a 1995 M3 at pretty slow speeds, it really didn't feel much different in terms of steering weight or shifter feel than my brother's Contour.  Maybe it was because it was an older car or the fact that I didn't take it above 25 mph (because I know what that car is like from the back seat at 125 mph), but I didn't think it was incredibly special.  OTOH, I loved the 530i I drove, other than I had no idea how to work the iDrive or anything else in the car.

While I love that thud you get when you close the door on a German car or the security it gives you, I'd take the tinny doors and harder plastics of the Japanese cars I've driven for the time being because I a) can't afford the German stuff that I want right now, b) if I could, maintanence would still be a bitch, and c) I have very little exposure to my dream car at this point (993 Turbo S).  In short:  I can't wait to be rich because it'll probably come that my fleet will be a bunch of BMWs, Porsches, and Subarus <---Es is ,,Undeutsch."
2. 1995 Saturn SL2 5-speed, 126,500 miles. 5,000 miles in two and a half months. That works out to 24,000 miles per year if I can keep up the pace.

The W221 feels much better than the W220 inside and out. The W220 wasn't bad in terms of build quality feel, but the W221 walks all over it.  :ohyeah:

The W221 is my favourite S-Class ever, and my family's been through all since the W126; a W126 300SD, a W140 500SEL (still there), W220 S600, W221 S550.

Okay, that would've been my guess.

My fave is the W140, in a dark color with BBS wheels.

I'm with you Adam. For those keeping up in Chat, I'm contemplating a 1996 500SEL right now.

Thats an S-600, and in 1996 it was called the S-500, not the 500 SEL.
