If by "terrible" you mean "it didn't sound like a V8," then yeah...it was probably the EB.

It sounded more like the love child of an Impreza and a Civic with a hole in the muffler. Definitely not a V8.

I just walked past a current model Mustang in a parking lot just as the owner started the car. It must have been the Ecoboost model because it had an absolutely terrible exhaust note. Maybe the owner had an aftermarket exhaust on it. If he did he should get his money back.

I get endless kicks out of the poor bastards that put an aftermarket exhaust on an Ecoboost F150. Sounds like a UPS truck. Awful.

The best sounding EcoBoost is the ones you can barely hear.  Same with all the rest of the I4 buzz buckets.  The only I4 that sounded any good, imo, was 1750 I4 used by Alfa in their Spiders and GTVs; maybe some older Lotuses.  Got to have the right manifold.  Even then, they pale in comparison to most V8 mustangs, especially the GT350.  It's almost sinful.

Focus RS, with the stock dual mode exhaust, and the Ford GT are the only two EcoBoost motors that sound any good.  The rest are best left heavily muffled.

Don't get me wrong. I think the Mustang is a great car and I don't have anything against 4 cylinder engines. I was just surprised at how truly awful the exhaust note on this Mustang was.

The Ford gt sounds amazing.  The Focus RS is not terrible, but does sort of sound like a very big chain saw.

These are nice sounds from an I4.

What I found a bit curious is that the regular Mustang is under cars, only the Shelby is under the performance category together with the Raptor.

Ford GT, Raptor, Shelby, Focus RS, and the STs are all products of the Ford Performance division (Ford's equivalent to BMW's M division or AMG).  The Mustang is not.  That's why you don't see the "regular" Mustang in any of the Ford Performance promotional material and why it is segregated on their website from the Shelby.

I think it makes sense. In times past the Camaro and Mustang were catch-all volume sellers for anything from secretaries to school teachers to frat boys to rich farm kids to racers. The market has changed drastically now with so many other choices that fulfill those needs. Move it up market with more content/value such that ANY iteration is a fairly serious performance car. Sure, they''ll sell less, but overall, they may end up with about the same total profit $$$, and a better brand overall courtesy of a better/more specific product in the marketplace.

Can't you get Ford Family pricing on the Mustang rather easily though?

Plus I think we have to compare it to the rest of the market. A $50K Mustang GT sounds steep.... but what does $50K get you anywhere else? Again, at GM, a comparable Camaro, a stripper C7, or a unicorn ancient SS. Challenger is inferior to the other pony cars. Everywhere else, you're going to get less HP, inferior engines and less content. I'd def rather spend $50K on a Mustang than any 2 door German car for example. That will put you in a 435i with maybe enough left over for power windows and keyless entry.

I can, but that's typically like 10-15% off MSRP.

Ford significantly raised pricing.  The equivalent to my car (base GT w/PP) is now 3k more than what mine stickered for.  Other than the styling update, power bump, and Michelin PS4S tires instead of Pirelli PZeroes, the content is exactly the same as my car (same stereo, same creature comforts content, brakes, wheels, suspension upgrades, chassis bracing, etc).  And it's still barely enough to contend with a base Camaro SS, which it now matches in price.  Ford still has no answer to the 1LE unless the previously rumored PP2 performance pack shows up with wider wheels and tires.  Given that Ford chronically under-tires the Mustang, I'm not holding my breath.

Looks like there is a second, higher level performance pack to be offered on the GT.  No official info on what it includes yet AFAIK.  I have a feeling that will be replacing the GT350, and be a direct competitor to the 1LE

They should give all the GTs the Voodoo intake manifold. Probably where they got a lot of that power

Only spec-sheet power. Real world driving is probably better with the regular manifold.

Ford Performance Power Pack Stage 3 includes the GT350 intake manifold and power increases throughout the rev range by about the same %.

My bet as well, IMO evidenced by the fact if it was really all that they'd simply have saved umpteen development $$$ on the 2018 power bump of 25 hp (new pistons/higher CR, DI, maybe new cams) and just slapped this stuff on instead.

Is an M2 better than a loaded Mustang GT though? They're pretty much matched in performance, usability and build quality... and the Ford looks and sounds better :hmm:

I'm sure there will be more cash on the hood for the Rustang/CAmaros as well, while I imagine M2s are selling at MSRP or a slight premium.

Ugly, small, questionable reliability, and at least two performance levels below? Sounds like a great deal.

They needed to go DI sooner or later anyway for fuel economy and efficiency reasons.  Bit of extra power was a bonus.  Coyote was designed for it from the get-go.

As has been discussed many times, all of them: braking, skid pad, acceleration, and most notably, track times. It's not even close. Even the M4 falls short...
