Long story short: this is a 2016 GL450 with the 3.0TT V6.  It has about 36,000 miles on it.  The exhaust sounded like this after about an hour of around town driving.

Any ideas?

I tried it on my iPhone and laptop.  It's working for me.

Possibly bad catalytic converter. Possibly covered under emissions warranty.
But it's hard to be accurate at diagnosis over the phone.  Check engine light on?

No...no indications besides the noise.  He says it's driving normally today.

It sounds kinda like a loose heat shield, which is super common on some vehicles.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Weird. It works on my Macbook, but not my Windows 10 desktop (and I double checked that audio from other sites was working).

I should mention that about a week ago, he complained of a strong, rich exhaust smell during startup.  Not sure if that is coincidence or not...

That's probably normal

Sounding more like a bad cat. Raw gas destroys cats, so something like a leaking injector or a misfire can do damage. The "honeycomb" inside the cat breaks up and starts rattling around.
It could also be a heat shield and a cold engine.   ;)

Could be the heat shield...same thing happened on my dads G500, though it sounded vastly different and was persistent for the entire time the engine was on.

I don't think the engine was cold, though, for the gas smell or the diesel rattling.
